Day two of 5A/3A regional track wraps

Sahari Freeman had a choice to make whether she realized it or not: Go all out to break the regional meet record in the 400 meters for the second day in a row or save some energy to make sure Estacado’s 1,600-meter relay team won handily. On second thought, why not do both? The Estacado junior won the 400 meters in a record-breaking 55.24 seconds Saturday, then blew away the competition on the last lap of the 1,600-meter relay on a rewarding day for the Lady Matadors at the Region I-3A track and field meet.

ABILENE — Lubbock High and Frenship each qualified one competitor to the UIL State Track and Field Meet on Friday after the first day of the Class 4A Region I meet at McMurry University. Frenship’s girls team finished the first day tied for second with 111/2 points, trailing only Fort Worth Western Hills. But it was Lubbock High’s boys team that will be sending at least one competitor to Austin after Erin Lopez finished second in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 13/4 inches.

Levelland's Murphree, Woodard, McCutchen clinch trips to Austin

Falicity Murphree and some of her Levelland High School teammates are going to state. And this time, it’s not just playful banter. Murphree won a Region I-3A title in the girls discus Friday and Levelland’s Preston Woodard and Morgan McCutchen clinched trips to Austin with runner-up performances at the Fuller Track Complex. “That’s awesome,” Murphree said, “because we joke around all the time. ‘Hey, we’re going to see you in Austin. We’re going to make it.’ And then when you actually do make it, it’s overwhelming happiness.”

Region I-5A and I-3A meets are at Texas Tech

Texas Tech’s Fuller Track Complex will be the site of the Region I-5A and Region I-3A track and field meets that start today, and South Plains College is hosting the Region I-1A meet in Levelland. Regional meets in all classifications are today and Saturday. The Region I-4A meet is at McMurry’s Wilford Moore Stadium in Abilene, and the Region I-2A competition is at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.

EL PASO — Not all coaches like the area-round track and field competition that the University Interscholastic League put in place for all classes this year. Among the pluses, Coronado coach Mike Meeks noted last week, is some program would get to call itself area champion. Coronado nearly did just that Saturday, and the performance of the Mustangs’ relays wasn’t the reason they came up short.

High school track roundup: Frenship freshmen win four events at area meet 04/20/13 - 12:33am

WOLFFORTH — Danielle Leaks’ remarkable freshman track and field season at Frenship added another chapter Friday. Leaks won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump, helping the Frenship girls finish second in the Districts 3-4A/4-4A area meet at West Texas A&M. Leaks took the 100 in 12.4 seconds, the 200 in 25.83 and the long jump in 17 feet, 10 inches. She’ll advance in each to the Region I-4A meet next Friday and Saturday at McMurry University in Abilene.

Opinions mixed on track and field's new area meets 04/19/13 - 12:57am

With Preston Woodard being a district champion in two events, any other year the Levelland senior would be practicing this week to get ready for regional next week. Not anymore. Not the way the track and field postseason is set up this year. Instead, Woodard will be in Canyon today, taking part in the area-round meet that’s sandwiched between district and regional. “It’s a little discouraging,” Woodard said last week after he won the District 2-3A long jump and triple jump titles. “I don’t really like it. It gives me another chance to get hurt somewhere.”

Ogle, Rice extend streaks at 2-3A track meet 04/13/13 - 12:49am

WOODROW — Carson Ogle couldn’t resist peeking at the Pirates Stadium scoreboard as he came down the homestretch Friday in the 400 meters. There was no doubt the Shallowater junior was going to three-peat as district champion, but that’s not the whole reason so many teammates and coaches greeted him beyond the finish line. Ogle broke the 50-second barrier for the first time — and a school record dating to 1989 — by running 49.99 seconds in windy conditions at the District 2-3A track and field meet. The record was 50.12, and Ogle’s previous best was 50.5.
