BERKELEY, Calif. — Tim Siegel could barely describe the heartbreak he and his 22nd-ranked Texas Tech men’s tennis team were feeling after a 4-3 loss to No. 14 California in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday. “All the losses of my 20 years can’t add up to the pain that we’re feeling here,” Siegel said. “These three seniors did so much and battled right to the end.” A win would have put Tech in the round of 16 for the first time since 2005. Instead, the Red Raiders fell in the second round for the fourth time in five years.

Tech officials: Bowlsby means stability for Big 12 05/05/12 - 5:51am

Texas Tech officials are confident the Big 12 tabbed the right commissioner to stabilize and enhance the beleaguered conference. The league announced Thursday that Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby would be the Big 12’s fourth commissioner in 16 years. He will start his new job June 15. “The vote was not only unanimous, it was enthusiastically unanimous,” Tech president Guy Bailey said of the hire. Bailey said conference stability and negotiating television contracts were the chief issues affecting the university when making the hire.

Texas Tech has spent months seeking a broadcast partner for its third-tier sports programming and assessing how much and what type of Red Raiders programming to produce and distribute. Last year, as the University of Texas was making headlines with the Longhorn Network, Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said other universities had the opportunity to form networks of their own, be it digitally over the internet or through television. In September, Hocutt said Tech was researching its third-tier programming options “as we speak.”

Texas Tech sports roundup: Raiders take third at Big 12 golf meet 04/30/12 - 5:23am

TRINITY — Texas Tech didn’t look like one of the favorites going into the Big 12 Conference men’s golf championships. The Red Raiders had two players suspended recently, finished ninth in their last tuneup at the 10-team Aggie Invitational and were seeded sixth in the conference tournament. But Tech finished third Sunday at Whispering Pines in what coach Greg Sands said was one of his team’s best performances of the year. Freshmen Clement Sordet and Matias Dominguez posted top-10 finishes and junior Finley Ewing IV tied for 11th in the 50-player field.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Texas Tech softball team earned a win against Kansas on Saturday, 4-1, in a game that was resumed after being suspended due to weather on Friday evening. The Red Raiders then dropped the second game of the series, 5-4, on a walk-off single from Kansas’ Mariah Montgomery, evening the series at a game apiece. Tech (38-14, 11-9) will try to earn the series win in the finale at 2 p.m. today. Cara Custer (24-9) took the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, in 31/3 innings of relief. ■ Men’s tennis
