Lady Raiders leap into sixth after second day of NCAA Central Regional   05/11/13 - 12:44am

NORMAN, Okla. — Powered by an even-par 72 from Gabby Dominguez, the Texas Tech women’s golf team made a huge jump in the team standings in the second day of the NCAA Central Regional on Friday. The Lady Raiders jumped nine spots from 15th to sixth in the team standings at 7-over 295 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Tech shot the third-lowest team score of the day. The Lady Raiders need to finish in the top eight after Saturday’s final round to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Mississippi State and Cal-Davis are tied for sixth at 16-over with Tech.

Tech sports roundup: Lamb wins Big 12 title in long jump   05/05/13 - 12:51am

WACO — Two days before the Big 12 outdoor track and field championships started, Bryce Lamb said he wanted to go out with a bang because his performances at conference meets tended to run hot and cold. The Texas Tech senior debuted three years ago by winning Big 12 indoor titles in the long jump and the triple jump, but nothing since in Big 12 meets has particularly pleased him. On Saturday, he was back in top form.

Tech sports roundup: Weldon takes fourth in hammer throw   05/04/13 - 12:54am

WACO — Texas Tech sophomore Kole Weldon burst onto the scene nationally two months ago with a second-place finish in the shot put at the NCAA indoor track and field championships. Shot put is his specialty, but he’s not bad at other throws, too. On Friday, Weldon went 185 feet, 5 inches for fourth place in the hammer throw at the Big 12 Conference outdoor championships, giving Tech its first five points of the three-day meet. “He hasn’t thrown the hammer a lot this year,” Tech coach Wes Kittley said, “but he went out there and did exactly what I wanted him to do.”

Tech sports roundup: Gray dominates as Red Raiders drop fifth straight series with 6-2 defeat   04/28/13 - 12:42am

NORMAN, Okla. — Right-hander Jonathan Gray limited Texas Tech to just one run over 71/3 innings, and No. 11 Oklahoma handed Texas Tech its fifth straight Big 12 series loss with a 6-2 victory Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The teams finished off Friday’s 8-0 Sooners victory prior to the game after it was delayed in the ninth inning by severe weather. Tech (19-24, 5-12 in Big 12) has now lost the first two games in each of its last four league series. Tech will try to avoid the sweep when the teams meet for the final time this season at 1 p.m.

Texas Tech sports roundup: Women's tennis team outlasts K-State at Big 12 tourney   04/27/13 - 12:46am

NORMAN, Okla. — The No. 17 Texas Tech women’s tennis team dominated the girls doubles portion of its opening match at the Big 12 Conference Championships to secure a 4-3 victory over No. 54 Kansas State on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center. With the win, Tech (19-5) will face Texas in the semifinals today at 3 p.m. “There were a lot of reasons why we shouldn’t or couldn’t win today, and we definitely could have given in in several different areas,” Tech head coach Todd Petty said. “I was just really impressed with the character in which they played with.”
