Record payout helps boost Tech budget to $65 million

Two weeks ago, at the end of its annual spring meetings, the Big 12 Conference announced it would distribute a record $198 million of revenue to the member schools. That’s $22 million apiece for eight original members, Texas Tech being one, and $11 million apiece for newcomers TCU and West Virginia. So how does Texas Tech’s $22 million get applied? “All conference revenue is reinvested back into our athletic department annual budget,” Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said. “It goes into line items of recruiting, team travel, equipment, game operations ... .”

Tech looks for better numbers from baseball, football after APR release   06/12/13 - 12:59am

All 17 teams meet NCAA threshold for 2011-12

The NCAA’s Academic Progress Report released Tuesday showed all 17 teams from Texas Tech had satisfactory numbers over a four-year period, But baseball and football have room for improvement and men’s basketball will be closely watched, a Tech official said. The maximum APR is 1,000, and 930 over a four-year period is the threshold to avoid potential sanctions from the NCAA. The report showed the Tech baseball team with a 912 for the 2011-12 school year and a 935 multi-year (four-year) APR.

Lubbock names dot Texas Sports Hall of Fame ballot   06/06/13 - 12:32am

Hays, Norris, Cavazos in consideration for shrine

Former Lubbock Christian University and Texas Tech coach Larry Hays, Tech football all-American Bobby Cavazos and former boxing world champion Terry Norris from Lubbock have made the ballot for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2014. Also on the ballot are former University of Texas coach Fred Akers, who was head coach at Lubbock High in 1965, and former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson, who led Western Texas College in Snyder to the NJCAA basketball championship in 1980.

Lady Raiders leap into sixth after second day of NCAA Central Regional   05/11/13 - 12:44am

NORMAN, Okla. — Powered by an even-par 72 from Gabby Dominguez, the Texas Tech women’s golf team made a huge jump in the team standings in the second day of the NCAA Central Regional on Friday. The Lady Raiders jumped nine spots from 15th to sixth in the team standings at 7-over 295 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Tech shot the third-lowest team score of the day. The Lady Raiders need to finish in the top eight after Saturday’s final round to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Mississippi State and Cal-Davis are tied for sixth at 16-over with Tech.

Tech sports roundup: Lamb wins Big 12 title in long jump   05/05/13 - 12:51am

WACO — Two days before the Big 12 outdoor track and field championships started, Bryce Lamb said he wanted to go out with a bang because his performances at conference meets tended to run hot and cold. The Texas Tech senior debuted three years ago by winning Big 12 indoor titles in the long jump and the triple jump, but nothing since in Big 12 meets has particularly pleased him. On Saturday, he was back in top form.
