LAS VEGAS — Cara Custer pitched seven strong innings, and the Texas Tech softball team won its fourth straight on Saturday, taking a pair of games at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Stephanie Craig Park. Custer (4-3) scattered a run on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts to lead the Red Raiders to a 5-1 win over Portland State.

LAS VEGAS — The Texas Tech softball team picked up a pair of wins Friday at the Desert Classic, downing Ohio State, 7-4, and shutting out Long Beach State, 2-0. The Red Raiders scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning against the Buckeyes to snap a four-game losing streak. Mikey Kenney was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Holley Gentsch was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Raven Richardson hit a solo home run in the fifth. Cara Custer tossed a complete game shutout against Long Beach State. She gave up seven hits and walked two batters.

Willis poured in a career-high 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting in Tech’s win over the Sooners on Saturday, the first Big 12 Conference win of the season for the Red Raiders. Despite returning 19 letterwinners and the majority of its pitching, the Texas Tech baseball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2012 Big 12 Conference baseball coaches poll, the conference released Tuesday. Teams earned points for each vote, with a first-place vote worth nine points and a ninth-place vote worth one. Tech finished with 27 points, just one behind sixth-place Oklahoma State (28) and two points behind fifth-place Missouri (30).

The 42nd-ranked Texas Tech women’s tennis team dominated on Saturday to take down Santa Clara, 5-0, at the Lady Raider Tennis Shootout at the Lubbock Country Club. Tech began play with a sweep of doubles play, getting victories from Elizabeth Ullathorne and Rashimi Teltumbde, 8-4, Caroline Starck and Nikki Sanders, 8-2, and Samantha Adams and Kenna Kiglo, 9-7. In singles play, Ullathorne, Starck and Teltumbde all cruised to straight-set victories while Adams won in a second-set tiebreaker. Tech resumes action in the tournament at 8 a.m. today.
