Tech baseball team assists Goodwill in sorting clothes for tornado victims

OKLAHOMA CITY — Even before they arrived for the Big 12 Championships on Monday, May 20, the Texas Tech baseball team was asking what it could do to help victims of the Moore, Okla., tornado that killed 24 and devastated thousands. On Wednesday, with the start of the tournament delayed a day, the Red Raiders finally got their chance to help, and dove into it head first.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Gray, overcast skies welcomed the Texas Tech baseball team for its practice Tuesday morning in advance of the Big 12 Championship at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Red Raiders were only about 10 minutes into practice before the ballpark grounds crew kicked them off to put the tarp on as more rain advanced into the area after Monday’s severe storms that wiped out parts of Moore, Okla., just to the south. Little did anyone know at the time that it wouldn’t be Tech’s only, or longest, delay of the week.

OKLAHOMA CITY — For once, the discussion around the coaches prior to the start of the Big 12 Conference Championship did not revolve around how many teams needed as many wins as possible to garner attention from the NCAA. That was the furthest thing from any of the coaches’ minds as they arrived one by one Monday and Tuesday for the tournament. Everybody’s thoughts were with the tornado victims in Moore, just south of Oklahoma City where a reported EF-4 destroyed thousands of homes and killed 24 people.

Texas Tech baseball coach Tim Tadlock has felt all along that if his team could just get into the Big 12 Championships and build some momentum on the way, it could do some damage. This ought to do the trick. One night after collecting season highs in runs and hits, the Red Raiders got another solid pitching performance from Jonny Drozd and enough offense to earn their second Big 12 Conference series victory of the year with a 7-1 win over Baylor at Rip Griffin Park.
