It doesn’t take a statistician to see what lies ahead for the Texas Tech baseball team, or the hole the Red Raiders have dug for themselves. Going into the second half of Big 12 Conference action, the Red Raiders are tied with three other teams for sixth place — or, depending on how you look at it, last place — in the league race. They are just two games back of Oklahoma State, who they will face in a three-game series in Stillwater, Okla. beginning today at 6:30 p.m., and within shouting distance of fourth-place Oklahoma, who they’ve already lost a series to this season.

Pitching shoulders load for otherwise stricken Cowboys 04/19/12 - 12:34am

Frank Anderson was understandably concerned coming out of the fall about his pitching staff, having watched it get pounded day after day in intrasquad scrimmages. But as the 2012 season has unfolded, it’s his pitching that has shouldered the load for the Cowboys (19-17, 5-7 in Big 12) while the offense has struggled to score runs.

New Mexico sweeps Tech in series 04/19/12 - 12:29am

For most of Wednesday afternoon, Texas Tech did to New Mexico what it had done to it the night before, forcing the Lobos to rack up several hits just to score a few runs. But the Lobos took it a step further, as their pitching staff completely shut down the Red Raider offense for seven innings before holding on late for a 6-4 victory and a sweep of the two-game midweek series at Rip Griffin Park. Tech (22-17) scored three runs in the eighth to cut the New Mexico (19-18) lead to two and had the tying run at the plate with no outs in the ninth, but could muster no more runs.

Lobos explode in middle innings to rout Red Raiders 10-3 04/18/12 - 12:46am

Apparently, Texas Tech didn’t handle its newfound prosperity very well. After being sat down in order the first time through the lineup, New Mexico took advantage of Tech defensive miscues and exploded for 10 runs over the next four innings, and the result was a 10-3 rout of the Red Raiders Tuesday night at Rip Griffin Park.

Spencer eager to see how Red Raiders handle recent success 04/17/12 - 12:35am

The Texas Tech baseball team got everything it needed out of its weekend away from Big 12 Conference action. The Red Raiders have won four straight games for the first time since February, swept a weekend opponent for the first time this season and showed signs of breaking out of the clutch-hitting funk that has plagued them the past six weeks. Head coach Dan Spencer has seen his team trudge through adversity, with the look that it may be coming back around to the way it was playing the first two weeks of the season. Now, he’s eager to see what happens going forward.

Red Raiders blow big lead, beat Houston in extra innings to sweep series 04/16/12 - 12:32am

Texas Tech blew an eight-run lead, but came back in the bottom of the 12th for a 10-9 victory and a three-game sweep of Houston.

A team that has struggled all season just to win a weekend series, much less sweep one, didn’t really care how that sweep came about Sunday. Texas Tech didn’t mind blowing what seemed like a very comfortable eight-run lead or having to play three extra innings because of it, and certainly didn’t care how the winning run scored, just that it did. Nick Hanslik came across on a two-out infield single by Barrett Barnes in the bottom of the 12th for a 10-9 Tech victory and a three-game sweep of Houston at Rip Griffin Park.

Red Raiders capture first weekend series of the year with 7-1 victory over Houston 04/15/12 - 12:56am

Tech earned its first weekend series win of the season, giving Tech a three-game win streak for only the second time since February.

That there was a team at Rip Griffin Park racking up double-digit hits but struggling to string them together for runs was nothing new. What was unusual about it, and pleasing to the Texas Tech baseball team, was it wasn’t the Red Raiders, for once, struggling to score runs.
