Coulombe, Tech baseball stop Northern Illinois 8-5 02/26/12 - 1:51am

Daniel Coulombe’s first career collegiate victory was a long time coming. About four years, in fact. After suffering through an inconsistent freshman season at Southern California and two injury-plagued years between junior college and last year with Texas Tech, the redshirt-junior left-hander earned his first win since high school, even though it wasn’t his best effort as a Red Raider. But it was good enough for an 8-5 victory over Northern Illinois Saturday at Rip Griffin Park.

Friday’s challenge for Texas Tech redshirt sophomore right-hander Duke vonSchamann wasn’t necessarily going out and matching heralded St. John’s right-hander Kyle Hansen. The challenge for vonSchamann was showing the ability to have a second straight quality start in order to give the Red Raiders hope their Friday night starter will give them a chance to start future Big 12 Conference series on the right foot. Turns out, he did both at the same time.

Tech looking forward to measuring up against ranked St. John's team 02/24/12 - 1:37am

Head coach Dan Spencer spent part of his offseason right after the Big 12 Championships examining the teams with similar RPIs to Tech that qualified for the NCAA tournament and how their resumes differed from the Red Raiders. One of those teams that jumped out was St. John’s. The Red Storm finished second in the Big East last season, went 18-8 in conference play and lost in the title game of the Big East Tournament. Tech was three games under .500 in more of a baseball power conference and finished seventh.

Tech on top, bottom at Red Raider Classic 02/20/12 - 5:03pm

For the first three games of 2012, the Texas Tech baseball team had gone through all sorts of situations and had come out on top. The one thing the Red Raiders hadn’t done was play from behind or tied for a long period of time. But no one seemed worried after Missouri State used three runs in the final two innings — taking the lead off of all-American closer John Neely — and handing the Red Raiders their first loss, a 4-2 decision Sunday in the final game of the Red Raider Classic.
