Ritchie, Conley lead offensive outburst as seven Tech players rack up two hits each

NORMAN, Okla. — Todd Ritchie and Devon Conley each had key, two-out, two-run hits, and Dominic Moreno tossed five innings without allowing an earned run as the Texas Tech baseball team avoided a sweep at the hands of No. 11 Oklahoma with a 9-3 victory Sunday in the Big 12 Conference series finale at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Texas Tech faces tough task going up against OU pitcher Gray

Tim Tadlock spent six seasons as an assistant coach under Sunny Golloway at Oklahoma, so he might have a little knowledge of how the Sooners work. But as he takes his Texas Tech baseball squad into a three-game Big 12 Conference series against the Sooners in Norman, that knowledge of the players and the staff will go only so far. Eventually, it becomes about the players. “The players are going to play the game and we know our staff feels that way,” Tadlock said. “We want to compete and go out and make it about them.”

While the 11th-ranked Sooners (31-10, 8-4 in Big 12) possess the conference’s second-rated offense, there’s no doubt the key to their success has been juniors Jonathan Gray, a right-hander who starts on Fridays, and left-hander Dillon Overton, OU’s Saturday starter. Combined they are 15-3 and each possess an ERA below 2.60.

The Texas Tech baseball team came up short of matching its offensive output from Sunday’s run-rule victory over Kansas on Tuesday against New Mexico State. The good thing, though, is the Red Raiders didn’t need to. Matt Withrow tossed 41/3 shutout innings, his best outing in almost two months, and the Texas Tech bullpen backed him up for a 6-1 victory over New Mexico State on a cold, windy night at Rip Griffin Park.

Tim Proudfoot’s second career grand slam with one out in the bottom of the eighth capped the Red Raiders’ best offensive game of the year, and Tech ended a choking, nine-game losing streak with a 16-5 run-rule victory over Kansas on Sunday at Rip Griffin Park.

Five-run seventh pushes Kansas to victory

Normally, having ace right-hander Trey Masek on the mound is enough to keep Texas Tech in any game despite its struggling offense. Masek did his job on Saturday, holding Kansas to just one run in six innings. But making just his second start since missing a month with arm and shoulder tendinitis, he couldn’t pitch forever.
