Trey Masek’s first appearance this spring was less than stellar as he struggled in mid-February in the Texas Tech Alumni game. What a distant memory that seems to be now. Masek is showing why he came out of the summer as a top-round draft pick, and he continues to climb higher in the draft charts after running his scoreless innings pitched streak to 32 on Saturday in a 4-1 win over UT-Arlington at Rip Griffin Park.

Red Raiders ready for final non-conference weekend 03/08/13 - 1:24am

For three weeks, Texas Tech baseball coach Tim Tadlock has tried a variety of players in multiple positions both in the field and in the batting order trying to get a feel for the best possible combination with which to go into Big 12 Conference play. Starting today, there are only five more audition days for the Red Raiders before the league opener next Friday at Texas. TUCSON, Ariz. — Bryant Burleson’s two-out, two-run single capped a five-run seventh inning, and freshman right-hander Johnathan Tripp pitched five strong innings to lead the Texas Tech baseball team to a 5-2 victory against No. 16 Arizona on Wednesday at Hi Corbett Field. It is the first win versus a ranked opponent this season for the Red Raiders (8-6), who earn a split of the midweek series with the defending national champion Wildcats (11-4).

TUCSON, Ariz. — No. 16 Arizona used a solid start from left-hander Tyler Crawford and took advantage of a Texas Tech error for a four-run sixth inning, which made the difference in a 6-2 win for the Wildcats Tuesday at Hi Corbett Field. Crawford (2-1) allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out five in eight innings for the defending national champion Wildcats (11-3). The last time the Texas Tech baseball team hit the road — which was the first time this season two weeks ago, things did not go according to plan in terms of wins and losses. The Red Raiders won just once in five games in Florida, but first-year head coach Tim Tadlock said the trip was as much about continuing to build toward Big 12 Conference play and getting players to play at a high level as much as success on the field.

To say there’s been a stark contrast in success for the Texas Tech baseball team between playing at home and on the road would be an understatement. After opening the season winning its first four games at Rip Griffin Park, the Red Raiders took a five-day jaunt through central and south Florida, and it was anything but a vacation. Tech came back with just one win in five games, ending with an 8-6 victory over Florida International after having struggled in several phases of the game.
