STANFORD, Calif. — A teary-eyed Bob Bowlsby walked out of a Stanford auditorium to a roaring ovation from university coaches and staff members Thursday, leaving behind a lasting legacy at one of the nation’s top athletic programs for a conference in desperate need of a strong leader. The Big 12 Conference made it official in the afternoon, announcing Bowlsby as its commissioner. He will take over for interim Commissioner Chuck Neinas — who replaced the ousted Dan Beebe in September — on June 15 after six years as Stanford’s athletic director.

Report: Baylor exceeds limits on calls, texts 04/10/12 - 5:27am

WACO — Less than a week after its women’s basketball team won the national championship, Baylor said Monday it has been involved in a three-year investigation with the NCAA into what are believed to be hundreds of impermissible phone calls and text messages sent by coaches to young prospects.

DENVER — Brittney Griner and Baylor left no doubt they’re head and shoulders above any team in the country. In fact, they’re perfect. Griner had 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks to lead Baylor to a dominating 80-61 victory over Notre Dame in the NCAA women’s basketball championship on Tuesday night, capping a 40-0 season for the Lady Bears. They became the seventh women’s team to run through a season unbeaten and the first in NCAA history to win 40 games. It was the second national championship for Baylor, which also won a title in 2005.

WACO — Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III was smiling, slapping hands with his receivers and making precise throws. Just what Griffin had planned for his pro day, when he finally threw Wednesday for NFL personnel. That included owner Dan Snyder and coach Mike Shanahan from the Washington Redskins, who traded three first-round picks and a second-rounder for the No. 2 overall pick in next month’s draft, presumably to get the dual-threat quarterback from Baylor.

Texas A&M coach Blair faces former Arkansas team 03/19/12 - 5:23am

COLLEGE STATION — Gary Blair of Texas A&M is one of three coaches in Division I women’s basketball history to take two schools to the Final Four. He will coach one of those teams against the other today when the third-seeded Aggies meet No. 6 seed Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Blair took the Razorbacks to the Final Four in 1998 and led the Aggies to the national title last season. He isn’t excited about facing his former team for the first time, though.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Brittney Griner’s pursuit of a national title begins in earnest again this weekend — in an unexpected locale. Griner and top-seeded Baylor were sent to Bowling Green for the start of the NCAA tournament, but the 6-foot-8 star is taking the trip in stride. In fact, she has something in common with the northwest Ohio school that’s hosting first- and second-round games this year. “Brittney Griner’s the most excited because she thinks the university’s named after her,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. “She sees ‘BG’ everywhere you go, so that fired her up.”

COLLEGE STATION — When coach Gary Blair took over at Texas A&M in 2003, he went door to door begging people to come watch his struggling team play. Blair has since transformed the team into a contender, and he led the Aggies to their first national title last season. On Saturday, No. 3 seed Texas A&M will make its school-record seventh straight NCAA appearance, facing No. 14 seed Albany and hosting a tournament game for the first time since 1994. Albany is making its first-ever NCAA appearance after winning the America East tournament.

WACO — Brittney Griner and Baylor will begin the final leg of their run toward 40-0 in Ohio as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA women’s tournament. The Big 12 champion Lady Bears (34-0), who could become the NCAA’s first 40-win team if they win their second national title, open against Big West Conference tournament champion UC-Santa Barbara (17-15). The first-round game is Sunday in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Baylor No. 3 NCAA seed, facing South Dakota State 03/12/12 - 5:14am

The Baylor Bears are starting the NCAA tournament the same way they did two years ago, as the No. 3 seed in the South Region. “There are a lot of teams that would love to be in our position,” coach Scott Drew said Sunday. “We are playing better on offense and defense and we are rebounding more consistently. Now we have to keep playing hard and hopefully we will keep peeking at the right time.”
