LAWRENCE, Kan. — Markel Brown scored 28 points, Marcus Smart added 25 and Oklahoma State held on to upset No. 2 Kansas 85-80 on Saturday, ending the Jayhawks’ nation-leading 18-game winning streak. Smart had a pair of key putbacks in the closing minutes, helping the Cowboys (15-5, 5-3 Big 12) go on a 13-2 run that turned a 66-62 deficit into a 73-68 lead with just over a minute left. The Jayhawks (19-2, 7-1) took advantage of a couple missed free throws, trimming Oklahoma State’s lead to 81-80 on a layup by Elijah Johnson with 18.8 seconds left.

There were times when Collin Klein’s mother couldn’t help but worry, when she would watch her son take a snap from center, dodge a couple of defenders and then take off at a gallop. The play would usually end up with Kansas State’s quarterback taking a big hit, the kind that caused Kelly Klein to gasp. The kid would invariably drag himself off the turf, blood usually seeping from his elbows. He would adjust his facemask, hike back his shoulder pads and trundle back to the huddle and do it all again.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Jeff Withey admitted that he sleepwalked through most of Kansas’ two exhibition games. The 7-footer, a key component of last year’s national runners-up, has been trying to adapt to life without Thomas Robinson, the All-America forward who left early for the NBA draft. Withey’s the guy who’s getting the double teams now, and the guy all eyes will be on in the paint. He finally woke up Friday night, and gave everybody watching something to see.

FORT WORTH — Gary Patterson figures he was known more for playing his guitar than anything he did on the field as a Kansas State player back in the early 1980s. During two years as a safety and linebacker for the Wildcats, Patterson played “a lot on scout teams, a little bit of special teams.” But it was also at K-State where he started his coaching career, as a graduate assistant in 1982 for the school’s first-ever bowl team.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Corey Fuller caught a 25-yard touchdown pass and Trevone Boykin threw to Josh Boyce for the 2-point conversion, lifting TCU to a 39-38 double overtime win over No. 23 West Virginia on Saturday night. TCU (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) got the victory after West Virginia (5-3, 2-3) went ahead on Geno Smith’s 25-yard TD pass to Stedman Bailey. On TCU’s possession, Boykin handed off to B.J. Catalon and he pitched to Brandon Carter, who threw to Fuller in the end zone.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Everybody seemed to be happy on the Kansas bench last season. Bill Self was certainly pleased with the way his team ran roughshod to an eighth straight Big 12 title. All his players were content, too, because they understood their roles, and that seven or eight of them were going to carry the load on a night-by-night basis. There could be quite a bit more discontent this season, at least early on, and Self believes that’s just as good as the positive vibes that enveloped the program last year.

STILLWATER, Okla. — Teammates say they can tell more from Oklahoma State quarterback Wes Lunt’s demeanor than from the few words he utters. By the end of Saturday’s game against TCU, Lunt was all smiles after a successful return to the lineup. Making his first start in six weeks, Lunt passed for 324 yards and a touchdown, and Quinn Sharp tied a school record with five field goals as Oklahoma State overcame a sluggish first half to beat TCU 36-14 on Saturday.

Texas Tech's Kithuka captures Big 12 cross country title 10/28/12 - 12:26am

AUSTIN — Texas Tech’s Kennedy Kithuka put his 2012 unbeaten streak on the line Saturday at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships and came through in spectacular fashion, winning the men’s individual title at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course on Saturday. Kithuka, who was perfect in four races previous to the championships, won in a time of 22:52.8, five full seconds ahead of runner-up Girma Mecheso of Oklahoma State, who crossed in 23:58.1. OSU won the men’s overall team title as Mecheso led three Cowboys finishing in the top four individually.
