Tech to start football Ring of Honor

Posted: June 28, 2012 - 11:16pm  |  Updated: June 29, 2012 - 12:45am

Texas Tech announced plans on Thursday for a football Ring of Honor, which will be unveiled during the team’s home opener against Northwestern State on Sept. 1.

The purpose of the ring of honor is to pay tribute to “an elite group of players and coaches that made outstanding contributions to Red Raider Football,” according to a Tech release.

Inductees will have their names etched on the west side of Jones AT&T Stadium, facing the playing surface.

“The careers of those that we will celebrate in this Ring of Honor brought national recognition to this university and left an incredible mark on our football program,” Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement.

Tech will announce the first class of inductees on July 5.

“I am a firm believer in celebrating and remembering those who helped shape our program,” Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said in a statement. “The men that will be inducted into this prestigious group left a mark on Texas Tech University that will forever guide this football program.”

Tech said in its statement that candidates for the ring of honor will be screened by an anonymous selection committee.

Great Idea. First Nominee......

I nominate John Scovell. His brilliant 37.2 passing percentage got him into the Tech Hall of Honor even before he participated in the dismantling of the program as a member of the conspiracy. So how much should the check be for? How about Jerry Turner next? How about Dicky Grigg next?

Honor

Texas Tech Football players and coaches are well deserving of this honor. Thank you, Mr. Hocutt and Coach Tuberville for recognizing this need. Those of us that played on the field are behind you. Others who cast stones from the stands, well, who cares.

Great Idea

This is long overdue. I too hope it is not political in nature and am anxious to hear who the first honorees are. I just hope Gerald Myers isn't one of them, ever.

Oklahoma dismantled the program.

@Lrbdoc

of course Myers will eventually make the ring...he is one of Tech's most winningest coaches and the AD during Tech's biggest years of growth...no matter how you feel about the man that's the facts Jack. Really gets old reading all the comments from the "cry babies" all the time.

Agree with wscott

Absolutely Gerald Myers deserves to be Tech's ROI. For no other reason than he was Tech's first All-SWC basketball player. He at one time held many records as a player (FT% among them).

He was also the head coach for Tech's first SWC championship team. And like it or not, he did many positive things for this university as AD.

Not only does he deserve to be in there, he most likely will be in the inaugural class---and deservedly so.

Gerald

Has no accomplishments on the football field other than he was the AD in the most productive football era at the school (which we all know what happened with that). He probably belongs in the basketball ring of something and from everything I've heard, the horses patoot national hall of fame.
