Texas Tech’s 2013 Thanksgiving is booked with a football game against Texas in Austin. It appears likely the Red Raiders’ Thanksgiving weekend in 2014 will be filled with another game against Baylor in Arlington.
Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he’s excited about the prospect of both.
“I like the fact it’s going to provide tremendous national exposure to us,” Hocutt said Tuesday. “I like the fact we have a big game on Thanksgiving weekend.
“If it’s Thanksgiving night playing Texas or if it’s the Saturday after Thanksgiving playing Baylor in Cowboys Stadium, I think that provides tremendous exposure for us as a program, being mindful that we are enjoying unprecedented revenue as a league and as a member of the Big 12 Conference.”
Tech and the Big 12 released 2013 schedules Tuesday, firming up the Tech-Texas game on Thanksgiving Day in Austin.
The site of next year’s Tech-Baylor game, set for Nov. 16, is to be determined. This weekend’s game between the two completes a second two-year contract for games in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
But Hocutt said Tech and Baylor favor extending the series at Cowboys Stadium through 2014 and could make it official in the next several weeks.
The home games are Baylor’s in 2013 and Tech’s in 2014. Hocutt said Baylor officials have expressed their desire to exercise a two-year option on the current two-year contract, putting next year’s game in Arlington. Hocutt said he feels likewise, provided the 2014 game stays on Thanksgiving weekend.
“If our home game was not going to be on Thanksgiving weekend,” he said, “then I would approach it differently than I do under the current scenario.”
Hocutt, who has the unsigned contract option on his desk, said he plans to discuss it this weekend with Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw and Dallas Cowboys officials.
“I would just like to have one more verbal confirmation and conversation with not only Ian but also with the Big 12 Conference,” he said, “to ensure the 2014 Texas Tech-Baylor game is indeed going to be on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.”
Texas expressed a desire to play at home on Thanksgiving every year to offset the loss of its traditional holiday matchup with Texas A&M, which left the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.
Hocutt said he has no problem taking that game in 2013, for exposure’s sake.
Even if he objected, he said he has little recourse to change it.
“Exactly when and where we play our conference games, outside of a neutral site, is something we have relinquished to the Big 12 Conference, who has relinquished that to ABC, ESPN and FOX,” Hocutt said. “... Our television partners have the last word as to when we play what games where.”
Some Tech fans have complained on other issues that the university is too willing to go along with Texas’ wishes. The perception arose again Monday when Tech confirmed the Thanksgiving game in Austin.
“I welcome the national exposure the 2013 Thanksgiving game is going to provide,” Hocutt said, “but at the end of the day, our television partners have final say on when games are scheduled.”
Asked if he had veto power over the schedule assignment, Hocutt said, “No. No, we don’t.”
Hocutt said the part of the 2013 schedule he doesn’t like is having road games against Oklahoma and Texas in the same year again, just like in 2011. No schedule has been released for 2014, but with Big 12 schedules constructed in two-year cycles, Hocutt said the Red Raiders will have Texas, Oklahoma and West Virginia at home again in 2014, just like this season.
Hocutt said Tech asked the Big 12 not to give the Red Raiders’ road games against Texas and Oklahoma in the same year, but understood “it’s not something that’s going to be easily accommodated.
“That being said,” he added, “it’s something that is going to be studied prior to the 2015 schedule, and if it is at all possible to separate (road trips to) those two opponents on our schedule, that would be when it takes place.”
The 2013 schedule gives the Red Raiders open dates on Sept. 28, which is two weeks after their Big 12 opener against TCU, and on Nov. 23, the Saturday before the Texas game.
Tech opens Aug. 31 at SMU and plays September home games against Stephen F. Austin and Texas State.
The toughest stretch of the season might be from mid-October to mid-November as Tech plays back-to-back road games at West Virginia and Oklahoma, followed by back-to-back home games against Oklahoma State and Kansas State.
Tech and Iowa State are the only Big 12 teams this season playing all nine conference games in a row, not having an open date to break up the league schedule.
“We are very pleased with the 2013 schedule,” Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said in a statement. “We will get two off weeks during the season, and I think they are at times that could really help us. Overall, it is a very challenging schedule, but that is what you get in the Big 12 Conference.”

Marque games at home......not!
Are you getting value
Would you buy tickets when there are two throw away games on the schedule? Thats 1/3 of your season ticket value.
??
Where's Wayland Baptist? Oh, right 2014....
Schedule
So, in addition to the very tough BIG 12 schedule, you want Tech to add 2-3 more top 10 teams??? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Here's the kicker.....you'll be the first to scream and holler about too many losses. I'm glad we have smarter people putting the schedule together. You have to give the team a chance to gain confidence and experience and hopefully win enough games to get to a bowl.
YOU PLAY HOW YOU PRACTICE!!
That's the importance of having true Division I teams in the non-conference schedule to really show you where you're teams at. Reflect on this season: Tech's defense and offense were both shining during the non-conference schedule BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T PLAY ANYBODY!!!!! If they would have played a tougher team prior to the start of the Big 12, THEY WOULD HAVE REALIZED THEY WERE STILL TRULY LACKING!!!!! Ask the soccer coach about playing tough non-conference schedules, it helps you make it to the post-season. If Holcutt wants to sell more season tickets, schedule tougher non-conference opponents that people want to pay to see; demand personnel changes from Tubbs; and bring the Baylor game back to Lubbock. Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, and SMU are embarrassing games to be playing. Wouldn't you rather pay to see Tech play Boise State, Hawaii, Michigan??? Don't lie to yourself.
I think
putting Boise State on the schedule would be a bad idea unless we were a top 10 caliber team. Instead of Boise, we should play Tennessee, Duke, Ohio, or Troy. Michigan would make a interesting matchup & Hawaii would be our only cupcake game of the season. We play 8 teams in conference with Top 25 potential & there is no need to play a top 10 opponent. Even Kansas played 3 or 4 teams close this season & they are getting better.
get real
From Lubbock area.Live in TN.People here tell me U Ark. and U Tn. are both looking at Tuberville as one of the canadaites for the head coaching job.If these schools are considering him .doesnt that say what kind of respect he gets even with his curent record at tech.He is a great record of helping oraganzations .torando vitims outside Dallas and makeing sure his players graduate .Despite his sideline incident.that many of you wanted to do to Neil Brown anway.Give the guy a little more time.I liked Leach too but Tech was just another place he had to be till his next breakthrough.Dont be scarcastic of every thing Tech does because of Leach. He was about his self and bulding his resume with Tech for the next job.
@TN RED
Well said. I think Tubs is great for the University when it comes to graduating his athletes. You dont hear about them taking basket weaving classes.
Yea, get real gets it too (why leeaches are WRONG ptIII)
I didn't hear Tuberville say the cupboard was left bare, those were my words and opinion. Nevertheless, a leeachus incompetentus tried to justify his recent great recruiting by sending me a link to 2007, 2008, 2009 classes. Then he admitted most of them "left, or washed out". My point exactly!!! Recent recruiting classes weren't any good, therefore Remember Houston left the cupboard bare. Now on to a fallacy/false statement made by multiple leeachus notpayattention- todetailus. The statement bringing up Ty Winder was made by the AJ agenda, er, "reporter" that wrote the story, not the coaching staff, who made the mistake of "taking the bait" and responding. And to correct another leeachus arehaterus, I have heard/read coach say in broadcast/print "we got outcoached" more than once, but I'm assuming nothing but blood will satiate your hatred. Then you will hate all over again when the next coach is not a disciple of RH. Leeaches are WRONG because why would a good coach or talented recruits want to come here with all the negativity and hatred y'all spread. Next installment we'll dissect the venom gland further.
Baylor Game
Bring the Baylor game home, period. Don't play an extra conference game on the road.
@ you play how you practice....
Right on.......Let's look to the SEC for non-conference, let's find our weakness before we end up in the middle of the pack in the Big 12. This false sense of winning against these cupcake teams has no value, other than dollar value.......we'll never be relevant with a non-conference schedule like this.....come on Kirby, its time to grow up!
is it just me or has anyone
is it just me or has anyone else noticed how the big 12 screwed TTU in their bye weeks??....
Peterbeenshucked
Who is this Peterbonesuk fella? Posts at 2:26 AM. Hmmmmm.
Guess he's one of them fellers who sits down in the basement all night and then forgets to pull up his britches when he comes up to get another beer.
Ain't never heared of him befer.
Never really understood...
...why the Leachers bring him up in every comment section.
He's gone and Tech doesn't want him back. If you Leachers don't want to support Tech any longer then the 5 of you can go support someone else; the rest of us don't care what you do.
If the Leachers really mattered in the grand scheme of things then Tech wouldn't be breaking fundraising, attendance, and RRC donation records like it is. Seems like the Leachers are crud at the bottom of the glass that Tech didn't benefit from in the first place.
Tech - Baylor should be home
Tech - Baylor should be home and home. The admins excuse is for exposer in DFW. Also my favorite, Tech doesn' draw well in Lubbock on Thanksgiving weekend. Though a understandable concern back before the surge in Tech's fan base.
Last two games played on Thanksgiving before moving the game to Dallas.
Baylor 2008 53,470 Stadium Capacity at that time 53,000 Houston 2010 53,461 Capacity at that time 58,000
Funny how the game with Baylor was moved to Dallas to get off of the Thanksgiving weekend, only to be moved in 2010 and Houston shoved down to the Thanksgiving so that we could [filtered word] out for the UT game. Yet even with a mediocre Houston team coming in Tech still drew very well compared to what Tech would have say in the 80's or 90's. So the Thanksgiving weekend argument doesn't fly.
Do not believe all the garbage that spews from this administration.
Why the Baylor Game is in Dallas
Alan White is Jerry Jones' bag man. After Alan unloaded the Lubbock source of his money for 20 years, he moved to Dallas and latched onto a new source of money. And he used the same m. o. Alan wants the game in Dallas.
Larry Anders bases in Dallas. Larry hands money to Kent and Kent hands most of the money to Ricky Perry. These two are very important people. Larry wants the game in Dallas.
John Scovell, he of 37% passing fame, is a self-described City Father of Dallas. John prefers that the game be played at the Cotton Bowl, in homage to his namesake, but that's not going to be resurrected. But King John, I mean Father John, wants the game in Dallas.
Accordingly, the game will continue to be played in Dallas.
Whether you like it or not.
Nonconference schedule
Those arguing for a nonconference top 10 schedule need to get a grip. Hasn't been done since the Spike Dykes days, and Tech had to consistently go on the road to play those games.
Everyone is scheduling cupcakes in their nonconference games now to boost their record and rankings. Dollars rule.
For example: Univ of Alabama will have played 4 nonconference games this year. First was Univ. of Michigan which is a big name, but is no longer a power. The others - Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and Western Carolina - all in Tuscaloosa. That is just how it is done now. No one will risk a loss when they don't have to anymore.
99class
Yes, by all means, you and pete and the other 3 hancers, lets make the entire 2012 football season about Leach and Leachies. After all, you have nothing else to bring to the table. Excuses about why the tuberville era is thusfar a failure, never addressing his post game lie. Pull your skirt up and run Mary!! I know youre not touching that one. You hancers (all four or five of you) just hope that little lie will disappear. It wont. Well maybe with an undefeated season and a championship. Wish in one hand...........
@coyote
who are the other 3 hancers?
@99classttu
Let's see.
The first person to mention Leach was tn.red who said he liked Leach and appears to be a hancer.
The second tomention Leach was a hancer named petebenisheck who did nothing but ridiculed Leach.
The third person to mention Leach is you, 99classttu.
The fourth and fifthe people to mention Leach were responding to you.
You can report back to spaeth that it did not work. Trying to switch the talking points from tuber to Leach failed again.
Runnin
Just an estimate, runnin, youre friendlier with them than I am, why dont you get an exact number? I know since 2010, Ive yet to meet one in public. Either theyre embarrassed to support the hancellor or they are so small in numbers (im guessing both), that none of us will ever see one in person. To be fair, Ive never met a team leach member either.
@coyote
i havent counted & ive never met a hancer or leacher. I can speak for myself when i say "im just a passionate fan".
Duh
I know how we play. I know how we used to play. What does that make me? Am I a man who hands money to Kent Hance knowing that it will be handed to Ricky Perry and that Hance will wink and receive credit? Or am I man who enjoyed the swagger of winning and receiving national recognition? Hmmmmmmm
Careful Red
Lest ye be labeled an anti-authoritarian. Remember the hancer credo, love of hance = love of texas tech = love of tuberville = love of the red raiders. Even though the hancers have quieted down since the rash of losses, the lie about the sideline incident, and the realization that the hance / james / tuberville trio of football program liquidation has made an absolute ass of them, they still exist. Lord only knows why.
schedule
Troy would be great on the schedule as a non conference foe. Ask Okie lite about Troy, LOL!!! Arkansas State would be a very good non-conference challenge as well!!!!!!
other factors in this schedule....
Kirby...did YOU consider these factors in signing off on this schedule?
1. Current Team: What a off-season motivator working out daily to play SMU, SFA. etc...
2. Recruits: come to Tech and play the likes of SMU, SFA.....now that's a pitch!
3. Fans: What a way to put butts in seats, schedule home games with SMU, SFA , T-State....way to build student and fan support before we play in the Big 12......
You must be too influenced by our Hillbilly Coach, your job is more than keeping him happy!
I like Spike's schedules
Remember the seasons where we used to play Ohio State, Florida State, Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, Oregon, Nebraska, (when we were in the SWC) and Arizona? Even though we did not win many of those games, it was still fun to look forward to those non-conference opponents. I'll give SMU a "pass" since they used to be an old SWC team. And, a good one at that before the NCAA ruined their program for ever. However, playing SFA and Texas State does NOTHING good for our team or fans. Let's let Spike make our schedules!
Boise
I think Boise would be perfect. They've been waving their arms yelling "look at us" for the past decade. By the way, they've been having a fairly rigid non-conference schedule, comparatively. But it would have to be a home and home at this point, they have that kind of cred, and face it, at this point we dont. We are now what we thought about TCU was to us. A middle tier team, that might knock you off if you have a really bad day. I think, therefore, a stronger non- conference schedule is indicated. Like northtx said, we arent in the position anymore to excite anyone by beating what amounts to a large high school 34-17, when we used to regularly hang 70 and 80 on teams like that. And this isnt a Leach vs Tubs thing, its just fact.
nonconference schedule
Don't lump me in with either camp. I think both groups are too far on the fringe. I was a fan of Tech before graduating high school and enrolling as a freshman in 1972. I was not supporting the way that the nonconference games are scheduled. I too liked the games that Spike scheduled. As was noted, we didn't win many but they were fun. I have great memories of being in the stands when Gabe Rivera was sacking the USC quarterback in Lubbock. Wish we could go back to those days.
It won't happen though, and that is not peculiar to Tech. That was my point.
No Class No Rivalry
Everyone is having their Rivalry game this week except Tech. Why NOT because they have NO class and there's NO Rivalry game because because Tech has NO Tradition. OU vs OSU, Washington vs Washington State, Florida vs Florida State.
