Dominguez ties for fifth individually

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A year ago, the Texas Tech men’s golf team started the final round of an NCAA regional one shot out of fifth place, played poorly and finished 10th. The Red Raiders controlled their nerves better the second time around. With the same five players in the lineup, Tech advanced to the NCAA championships Saturday with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Columbus regional after starting the day tied for fifth.

Tech shot a final-round 9-over-297 to drop from sixth to 11th place in the team standings, coming up short of the top eight finish needed to advance for the third straight season.

NORMAN, Okla. — The Texas Tech women’s golf team has some ground to make up at the NCAA Central Regional. As a team, the Lady Raiders fired an 8-over-par 296 on Thursday in the first round of the regional at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Tech sits in a tie for 15th place, 14 strokes back of first-place Florida. The top eight teams qualify for nationals. There is a four-way tie for seventh place at 292 between Mississippi State, Arizona State, Wisconsin and Indiana, meaning Tech is still in the thick of things.

The good thing about advancing out of the NCAA golf regionals is teams only have to finish in the top eight. But that doesn’t mean the Texas Tech women’s golf team isn’t aiming higher. “I don’t just want to say that we want to get top eight,” sophomore Elin Arvidsson said. “Of course we want to make it to nationals, but I think that all of us are like, ‘hey, we want to win the tournament.’” The Lady Raiders begin their quest today for the NCAA championships in the NCAA Central Regional at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., one of three regional sites.

Texas Tech was made the No. 7 seed at the Ohio State Regional when the NCAA announced the men’s golf postseason assignments on Monday. It’s the 12th year in a row for the Red Raiders to make the postseason. The Ohio State Regional is scheduled for May 16-18 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The NCAA tournament consists of six regional sites, from which five teams will advance out of each to the NCAA Championships. The latter is scheduled for May 28 through June 2 at The Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.

The Texas Tech women’s golf team on Monday was assigned to the NCAA Central Regional and seeded seventh of the 24 teams. The regional is May 9-11 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA championships May 21-24 in Athens, Ga. It’s the fourth year in a row Tech has been invited to a regional. Each of the last two years, the Lady Raiders finished ninth, just missing a trip to the NCAA championships.

Tech golfers seventh at Big 12s PRAIRIE DUNES, Kan. — The Big 12 Conference golf championships concluded Wednesday after enduring poor weather conditions all week, but Texas Tech couldn’t make up ground on the final day and finished seventh in the tournament. The Red Raiders shot a 57-over-par 897, 38 shots behind first place Texas. Oklahoma State (863) and Oklahoma (869) finished second and third, respectively, with TCU (871) and Kansas State (891) rounding out the top five.

PRAIRIE DUNES, Kan. — Bad weather forced the postponement of Tuesday’s play at the Big 12 Conference golf tournament, a day after two weather delays kept seven of the 10 teams from finishing the second round. Texas Tech is in seventh place, though the Red Raiders were among the teams whose players were still on the course Monday when darkness fell. The tournament has been shortened to 54 holes from the scheduled 72. Play is scheduled to resume at noon today with the conclusion of the second round, followed by the final round.

PRAIRIE DUNES, Kan. — Texas Tech was in seventh place during the second round of the Big 12 men’s golf championships when play was suspended Monday because of darkness — the end to a long day that featured two weather delays. Seven of the 10 teams return to the course at 11 a.m. today to complete the second round, and the third round is scheduled to begin two hours later. Texas, Oklahoma State and TCU completed the second round and were the clubhouse leaders at 571, 577 and 578, respectively.

Rawls picks up next Golfweek honor 03/14/13 - 12:54am

The Rawls Course at Texas Tech was honored again this week by Golfweek Magazine as the No. 2 course in the state of Texas for the second straight year. Butterfield Trail in El Paso was the only golf course in the state to beat out The Rawls Course while Pine Dunes in Frankston came in third. The rankings were done for the March 8 issue of the magazine. The course is scheduled to host the NCAA men’s Golf Regionals in 2015.
