Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt on Tuesday said he believes interim basketball coach Chris Walker has done an “exceptional” job this season, but he did not indicate when a decision may come on Walker’s future with the program.

Responding to an interview request to discuss Walker and the future of the basketball program, Hocutt said in a statement he is pleased with the work Walker has done.

“We agreed we would go through this basketball season with Chris Walker as our interim head coach, and that’s going to be the process we continue to follow,” Hocutt said. “The way Chris Walker has represented the university and the basketball program has been exceptional. I’m very proud of the way he’s handled the opportunity and I look forward to the rest of the season.”

Walker, who was tabbed interim coach on Oct. 4, two weeks after the resignation of former coach Billy Gillispie, has led the Red Raiders to a 9-9 overall record and a 2-5 mark in Big 12 Conference play so far this season.

Tech, which still has at least 12 games left on its schedule, has already won more overall and conference games than it did last season.

Walker also guided Tech to one of the surprise wins of the Big 12 season, a 56-51 upset of Iowa State last week.

Walker, who was a point guard during his playing days at Villanova, had spent nearly two decades as an assistant — including one season under Gillispie — before being named Tech’s coach about four months ago.

Walker deserves the HC job

Considering the handicaps he has had to work with, his positive attitude and the way he represents Tech, and the results so far, Walker deserves a three year contract so he can go out and recruit another assistant and some players to elevate the program. I am not sure what is to be gained by waiting. It is not like great coaches are waiting to see what happens here and are coveting the job. It is going to take some heavy lifting to get this program to being competitive in this league.

Of course Hocutt is 'mum', Nick!

Did you really believe that Kirby Hocutt was going to give you a decision on Walker's coaching status at this point when it was clearly communicated before the basketball season even started that this decision would not happen until the season was over? What part of that don't you understand?

I agree that Walker has done a good job (so far) based on the program's situation, but the decision on his future will not happen until AFTER basketball season.
