AUSTIN — Cameron Ridley made two free throws and big defensive play in the final 35 seconds, sending Texas to its first Big 12 win of the season Saturday night.

Texas trailed by one when Ridley altered a shot and hustled down the floor for an offensive rebound before he was fouled. His two free throws put Texas ahead 65-64 with 31 seconds left.

Texas Tech had a chance to win. Jaye Crockett missed a jumper. Jonathan Holmes grabbed the rebound, then made two free throws with 1 second left.

Texas (12-4, 1-2) desperately needed the win. The Longhorns started 0-5 in conference play last season and never recovered, tailing off into the program’s first losing season in 15 years. A similar start might have doomed coach Rick Barnes’ rebuilding project.

Isaiah Taylor scored 14 points to lead Texas.

Crockett and Robert Turner each scored 19 points for Texas Tech (8-8, 0-3).

At least they are playing em close

From the games that I have seen this team is actually playing good ball. At least when they get beat its not by 15 or 20 like last years squad. Tubby seems to be doing a good job and against good teams Tech is keeping it close. Keep fighting boys! Wreck Em!

Hard to be optimistic

When both men's and women's teams lose to teams with zero conf wins, when our men's and women's teams are a collective 0-7 in conf (maybe the only major conf school in US w/ zero conf wins for both teams), and are continuing what is now several years of futility.

At least the men's team resembles a D1 squad. Can't say that for a women's team which lost at home to ACU.

Our athletics have reached the futility stage. Of course, we'll also have a losing conf record in baseball, which will take our last 4 years to 1-15 in terms of winning conf records in 4 major sports.

This game should have been a

This game should have been a win. We had opportunities for some easy buckets where the same players can't seem to finish when they're right under under the basket. Can't wait for coach to start bringing in his recruits. Btw our freethrow shooting has definitely improved. Now go win some big 12 conference games. Wreck 'em.

Gunz

Maybe you need to point that gun sidewayz to your skull, or all of your posts seem very suicidal as a tech fan. You are the most negative Nancy, fair weather that I have ever seen on here. 3 first year coaches in every major sport and you are expecting zero mistakes. I am guessing that you never lost in sports or screwed up at work. You seem to be very perfect! Also about the whole conference record comment, didn't most teams just start conference games?

@RRFL

You call it "negative Nancy." I call it "Factual Fred." While you refer to "suicidal" and ask me to be the same, it is unsurprising that you do not refute ANY facts.

In the last 4 years (post-Leach), FB has had losing conf records in all 4 years, BB will be all 4 after this year, WBB had a winning conf record only last year (while still losing 2x to BAY by 50+ points) and baseball will have a losing conf record this year, no doubt (and, what will be its 8th or 9th consecutive losing conf record).

This is not about you, or me, or, especially, the athletes. They do their best.

The first step to improvement, applicable to personal/athletic/professional life, is to ADMIT SIGNIFIGANT DEFICIENCY.

"Happy talk" does not own up to this string of abysmal performances. We have the worst athletic program in the B12-2 over the last 4 years. Perhaps the entire country. We are a laughingstock, even looking up at BAY (BAY?) in every major sport. You can't explain that away. When every major sport has the 4-year record ours do, WE HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM!

Sports matter; that's why we're on this site. What do I want? Accountability! From the Pres. on down. Myers retired; he should have been canned. Hocutt should be on notice. These results are unacceptable.

Finally, if you want to debate, fine. Just don't use spurious/specious arguments. I complained about 4 straight years of losing conf records in every major sport; said complaint doesn't not expect "perfection" or "no mistakes," to borrow your phrase. Sophomoric debate tactic; alter the other's debate point, then ridicule your revised version of his point. Do better.

Not down on Hocutt

Lets remember that he ran off Kurry and Tuberville. Those were not bad decisions. Kingsberry was a unanimous hire. I am for giving Whitaker time (at least now). She inherited Kurry's mess.

That being said, things cannot keep going in this direction. Also, what would Lubbock be without Tech. You need to support our sports teams and you don't. (except for football)

"Happy Talk?"

Brand new coaches, in every sport. Your facts, or the last 4 years are a bit hazy. Yes Tech has not had the best last 4 years, but you have to recognize that there are 3 new coaches and one coach which will be his 2nd year this year in baseball. Its a rebuilding year for all the major sports. I wouldn't expect success especially when they haven't done well in the last four years. The only reason why you have a negative view on everything tech athletics is because of what happened to Leach.

Facts

aren't hazy, but excuses are. I think we should have kept Leach, sure. But the record in all sports has been poor for some time. In the last 8 (EIGHT!) years we have 1 winning record each in BB and WBB (both long ago) and none in baseball. And 0 in FB, post-Leach.

You must have infinite patience.

Patience is a Virtue

Considering that Tech hasn't won an outright conference championship since they were in the Border Conference creates my patience for Tech Football.

Baseball has been a joke since Hays left. Well since Greg Evans and Anderson left many many moons ago. Now we seem to think that if we continue to recruit kids from the greater South Plains we can compete. Tech has always done it by the JUCO pipeline in baseball. I have consistently blasted my opinions in the baseball blog when Spencer was here.

Basketball just needs time, I don't know what to say about it because Texas isn't traditionally a Basketball recruiting powerhouse, so I am lost in that realm.

To be a Tech fan you have to have patience, when they do well in any sport we go ape [filtered word]! We do have a continuous chance of being humbled throughout the year.
