Previous high for Red Raiders to receive Big 12 honor was three during 1997-98 season

A school-record five Texas Tech players were named to the Big 12 Conference all-academic team Thursday, more than any other team in the conference. Four Red Raiders — Jordan Tolbert, Dejan Kravic, Kader Tapsoba and Toddrick Gotcher — were named first-team members of the all-academic team. Ty Nurse was named to the second team. Tech’s previous high for all-academic members was three during the 1997-98 season. First-team members must have a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher, while second-team members must maintain a GPA between 3.0 and 3.19.

In journalism school they harp on you constantly not to bury the lead. So here it is: Chris Walker should become Texas Tech’s next permanent basketball coach. The timing of this column may seem odd to some. Walker’s Red Raiders are fresh off back-to-back lopsided losses, including a 91-67 setback at home against Oklahoma State on Wednesday night, a defeat the interim coach described as “humbling.” Since a win last month against Iowa State, the Red Raiders have struggled to be competitive — they’ve lost all but one of their last five games by double digits.

Strong homecoming for OSU’s Cobbins Michael Cobbins just needed a slice of home to turn in one of the best games of his career. The Oklahoma State sophomore forward, who graduated from Palo Duro up the road in Amarillo, recorded his first career double-double (13 points, 12 rebounds) in his team’s 91-67 win against Texas Tech. After the game Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said Cobbins has been the team’s most valuable player this season, despite the notoriety garnered by guards Marcus Smart, Markel Brown and Le’Bryan Nash.

Another trip to Lubbock can’t come soon enough for Markel Brown. For the second time in as many seasons, the Oklahoma State guard lit up Texas Tech inside United Spirit Arena, leading the No. 17 Cowboys to a 91-67 win against the Red Raiders, who lost their fifth game in a row and second straight in lopsided fashion. Brown went off Wednesday night for 25 points — all in the first half — one year after he netted a career-high 30 points in the same building. So what gives with the Hub City hot streak?

Chris Walker insisted when he took over as Texas Tech’s interim basketball coach in early October that his uncertain future wouldn’t alter the way he went about his day-to-day work. That appears to be especially true on the recruiting trail. Walker this season has attempted to draw a number of high-caliber athletes to Lubbock, and one of them will be in town today to watch the Red Raiders host No. 17 Oklahoma State at 6 p.m.

Texas Tech may already be out of the hunt for a Big 12 Conference title, but if college basketball has proven anything this season, it’s that pretty much any team has a chance to affect a conference race. The Red Raiders (9-12, 2-8 in Big 12) will have their opportunity to throw a wrench in the Big 12 title picture at 6 p.m. today when they host red-hot, 17th-ranked Oklahoma State (17-5, 7-3), which is riding a five-game winning streak and, with another victory, would join Kansas and Kansas State in a three-way tie for first place.

Two days after the Oklahoma State basketball coach had watched his team snap Kansas’ 33-game winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse, I asked him during a weekly media teleconference whether he thought the Jayhawks losing for the first time in Big 12 Conference play meant several other teams were now in the hunt for the league title. “I don’t know about that,” Ford told me. “I think Kansas is, obviously, the team to beat. No question. They are one of the best teams in America.” What a difference a week makes.

But this is not a typical season in the Big 12. After the Bears beat Texas Tech, 75-48, on Saturday, they made it into the locker room in time to see Kansas lose its third straight game, dropping the suddenly reeling Jayhawks into a second-place tie in the league (7-3) behind in-state rival Kansas State (8-2). Baylor is 6-4, tied with Oklahoma and Iowa State for third place.

WACO — Josh Gray jumped into the air, stole the ball in the middle of the court and headed toward the rim. Texas Tech was up by one point eight minutes into Saturday’s game against Baylor, and the 6-foot freshman point guard, trying to give his team a spark, soared in for a dunk. Instead, he slammed the ball off the back of the rim and out of bounds.
