Dallas Skyline cornerback commits to Tech

Posted: February 21, 2012 - 10:34pm

Texas Tech picked up an oral commitment Tuesday from Will Barrow, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound cornerback from Dallas Skyline, which reached the Class 5A Division I state semifinals last season.

Barrow attended a Tech junior day Saturday with his father. He said he was ready to commit after talking it over with his family.

“I chose Tech because of the coaching staff and the team,” Barrow said. “The coaching staff is real encouraging. Coach (Robert) Prunty is a real, real good guy, a very encouraging man. Coach Tuberville is a great man as well.

“I felt good as soon as I stepped on the campus. I came home and talked to my parents about it, and they agreed as well, so that’s why I made my decision.”

Barrow also attended a junior day, which are invitation-only events, at Texas A&M. He said Tech was the first program to offer him a scholarship.

“When I heard that, I was real excited,” he said. “I kind of wanted to do backflips. My dad was excited for me as well.”

Skyline went 14-1 last season, losing to eventual state champion Southlake Carroll. Barrow made three interceptions and was voted first-team all-District 9-5A. He said he thinks several factors made him a Division I prospect.

“Probably my ability to cover, play press and off man, my knowledge of the game, being able to read the quarterback and break on the ball,” he said.

Oral commitments are non-binding. The national signing period for the 2013 class begins Feb. 6. That’s a long time to wait, but Barrow said he’s firm to Tech.

“I don’t think anyone can change my mind,” Barrow said. “A commitment is when you’re dedicated to where you want to go.”
