NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma connected on three home runs during the first three innings Saturday as the 12th-ranked Sooners clinched the series with Texas Tech after a 5-1 victory at Marita Hynes Field.
The loss snapped a streak of three-consecutive Big 12 series victories for the Red Raiders (35-18, 8-9 in Big 12).
“We had too many strikeouts at the plate to beat a team like OU,” Tech coach Shanon Hays said. “I still believe we can come back and play well tomorrow but we just can’t strike out that many times. I thought we pitched and played defense good enough to win today. We just need to get the bats going a little bit.”
Three of Oklahoma’s (42-10, 13-2) first four hits in the game came via the home run as Georgia Casey sent a solo blast over the center field fence in the second, while Lauren Chamberlain and Brittany Williams both went deep an inning later.
Tech starter Cara Custer settled down from there, though, allowing just a run in the fifth off a sacrifice fly from Williams. Custer (12-7) took the loss in her second complete game of the season where she gave up just six hits, while matching her season high with six strikeouts.
The Tech struggled with 11 strikeouts for the second-straight day as Oklahoma starter Kelsey Stevens (31-7) picked up her second win of the season.
Stevens allowed only a solo home run to Kierra Miles in the fifth inning for Tech’s only run so far in the series. Miles finished with two of Tech’s three hits, going 2-for-3. Tech looks to salvage the series at 12 p.m. Sunday.
