NORMAN, Okla. — Laura Chamberlain homered twice and drove in all four runs, leading No. 5 Oklahoma to a 4-1 victory over Texas Tech to take the Big 12 Conference series, 2-1. Michelle Gascoigne pitched seven strong inning for the Sooners (32-5, 8-2 in Big 12), scattering a run on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Chamberlain gave Gascoigne all the runs she would need with a two-run blast to right in the bottom of the first, then added another shot in the third, a two-run blast to left.

Texas Tech’s defense may be the unsung hero of its 13-game winning streak and third straight 30-win season. The Red Raiders are outscoring opponents 111-33 during the last three weeks, making their play in the field something of an afterthought. But it’s hard not to notice Tech’s Big 12-leading fielding percentage of .979, a figure that ranks the Red Raiders fourth nationally, “I think us being 30-7, a lot of that success has been because we made plays late in clutch situations,” coach Shanon Hays said.

A two-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the eighth inning, gave the Red Raiders a 5-3 extra-innings victory and completed a sweep of Iowa State.

Adriana Perez rounded third base with an ear-to-ear grin Sunday at Rocky Johnson Field, then met her smiling teammates at home plate. Texas Tech’s cleanup hitter has gotten used to trotting around the bases during the last week, hitting five home runs in her last six games. But this one, a two-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the eighth inning, gave the Red Raiders a 5-3 extra-innings victory and completed a sweep of Iowa State. “It wasn’t a fat pitch down the middle,” Perez said. “It was just inside, my go-to pitch. Once I swung I knew it was gone. I felt it.”

Raiders set new softball scoring record 03/31/12 - 12:34am

The seven runs Iowa State scored against Texas Tech on Friday night were the most the Red Raiders have allowed since March 6 — a span of 13 games. But a mercy-rule victory is never out of the question for Tech, which had made four of its last five opponents cry uncle. The Cyclones were no exception, and Tech’s bats hammered away for a 19-7 run-rule victory at Rocky Johnson Field, the Red Raiders’ 11th consecutive win. “Seven runs win a lot of games, just not this one,” Iowa State coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler said.

Perez brings hot bat for Tech softball 03/28/12 - 12:51am

Adriana Perez says she understands the mental side of softball just a little bit more each year. Texas Tech’s junior cleanup hitter hit a pair of home runs in the Red Raiders’ 10-2 victory against Midwestern State on Tuesday, and her mind deserved as much credit as her strength. She saw three outside pitches during her first-inning at-bat and grounded out to shortstop. Perez was ready for more of the same when she batted in the third inning and blasted the first pitch from Lindsi Glenn over the right-field wall.

After having its series pushed back by inclement weather, the Texas Tech softball team will host New Mexico in a doubleheader today at 11 a.m. at Rocky Johnson Field. The Red Raiders (17-7) dropped their first two games of Big 12 Conference play on Tuesday and Wednesday, losing 8-0 and 2-1 to Texas. New Mexico comes in boasting a No. 23 ranking and is 17-3 on the season. It is the first time Tech will host a ranked non-conference opponent since 2003. The teams will wrap up the three-game series at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. ■ Men’s tennis

No. 6 Texas beats Tech softball to sweep series 03/08/12 - 1:32am

AUSTIN — Rachel Fox held Texas Tech to two hits and No. 6 Texas beat the Red Raiders 2-1 Thursday to sweep the Big 12 Conference softball series at McCombs Field. Mikey Kenney’s sixth-inning home run, her seventh, accounted for Tech’s only run. The Red Raiders (17-7, 0-2) loaded the bases in the first inning on two walks and an Adriana Perez single. With one out, Logan Hall flied to center and Kenney was tagged out trying to score from third. Fox (6-0) then strung together three-up, three-down innings from the second through the fifth until giving up the homer.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Scott LeJeune had a pair of doubles and scored twice, Kevin Whitehead drove in a pair of runs with a double and a base-loaded walk, and No. 26 Texas Tech earned a big road victory on Tuesday, doubling up No. 13 Arizona State 8-4 at Packard Stadium. The Red Raiders (10-3) used a four-run seventh inning to break open a close game, and did so on only two hits, a LeJeune leadoff double and an RBI single by Brennan Moore. In between, the Red Raiders took advantage of two hit batters, a bunt single and one of three errors by the Sun Devils (8-3). That put Tech up 8-1.

Softball sweeps UTA in doubleheader 03/05/12 - 1:11am

Cara Custer, Brittany Talley and Chandler Moore combined to allow just one run on three hits over six innings, and the Texas Tech softball team closed out a doubleheader sweep on Sunday with a 7-1 victory over UT-Arlington at Rocky Johnson Field. Earlier in the day, Tech squeezed past Binghamton 4-3. Tech (17-5), after starting the year 1-4, has now won 16 of its last 17 heading into its Big 12 Conference opener at Texas on Tuesday.
