WACO — Nick Rivera won another Big 12 title in the 800 meters and three of his Texas Tech teammates delivered second-place performances Sunday as the Red Raiders finished third in the Big 12 Conference outdoor track and field championships. Rivera, a freshman from LaPuente, Calif., ran a time of 1 minute, 50.03 seconds, getting a Big 12 outdoor 800 title to go with the one he won during indoor season.

Since the inception of the Big 12 Conference, Nebraska and Texas A&M won eight team titles apiece in outdoor track and field with seven of the Aggies’ eight coming since 2007. But Nebraska left for the Big Ten Conference after the 2011 season and A&M left for the Southeastern Conference after the 2012 season, freeing it up for other teams. “That’s two in the last two years that we don’t have to deal with,” Texas Tech coach Wes Kittley said this week. “It’s nice not to have to go against them so many times.”

The wind died down just enough at just the right time, and Cierra White pounced on the opportunity. Texas Tech’s sophomore sprinter broke a school record, not to mention a 27-year-old stadium mark, with a winning time of 11.09 seconds in the 100 meters Thursday night at the Red Raider Open. The time will be adjusted upward by a few one-hundredths of a second for altitude, but ranks fifth in the world this season. “I’m extremely happy,” said White, from Philadelphia. “Now I’ve just got to go out there and try to run even faster, to be number one.”

With all-Americans Bryce Brown and Jamele Mason having completed their eligibility — Brown in 2011 and Mason in 2012 — Texas Tech had no obvious choice to carry the torch in the 400-meter hurdles. But now Isaiah Gill is flashing all-America potential, even if he needed some prodding to run that event. Gill goes into Tech’s final home meet today ranked No. 5 in the nation in the 400 hurdles after he ran a time of 50.58 seconds last weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays, winning the Olympic Development Elite section.

National champion thrower Hannah Carson was one of Texas Tech’s most coveted track and field signees in 2012, and then her college debut season ended minutes after it started. Last March, Carson uncorked a 166-foot javelin throw on her first attempt — good enough to set a school record and win the Willie Williams Invitational at Arizona — and then suffered a torn knee ligament on her second attempt. Oh, well. It’s not as if she didn’t know what came next.

STILLWATER, Okla. — Cara Custer and Brittany Talley combined for a two-hit shutout, and the Texas Tech softball team opened Big 12 Conference play Thursday with a convincing 10-0 victory over Oklahoma State at Cowgirls Stadium. The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run rule. Custer (12-5) started the game and tossed the first five innings, scattering two hits and a walk with 13 strikeouts. Talley then finished it with a perfect inning of relief to improve the Red Raiders to 27-12 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play.

One of the biggest highs for the Texas Tech track and field team two years ago was when Julian Wruck won an NCAA outdoor title in the discus as a sophomore. One of the biggest disappointments was when Wruck transferred shortly thereafter to join his girlfriend on the UCLA track team. One of the most pleasant surprises for Tech since has been the meteoric rise of another young thrower, Kole Weldon, to fill the void. The two former teammates and training partners are expected to square off this weekend at the Texas Relays in Austin.

Bryce Lamb took the Big 12 Conference by storm in 2010, winning the long jump and the triple jump as a freshman at his first Big 12 indoor meet. No one was really surprised, given that Lamb had been a top national recruit, one of the most heralded Tech coach Wes Kittley has ever signed. He left that meet thinking a national title might be just around the corner two weeks later. Instead, it took three years.

Tech men finish fifth with three athletes

Texas Tech qualified only three men for the NCAA indoor track and field championships — enough, as it turned out, to make a major splash. Senior Bryce Lamb won a national championship with the best triple jump of his life Saturday and the Red Raiders got fifth place, their all-time best showing, at the NCAA indoor in Fayetteville, Ark. Lamb, distance runner Kennedy Kithuka and thrower Kole Weldon accounted for 28 points. The three were suitemates at the national meet. On Friday, Weldon got second in the shot put and Kithuka won the 5,000 meters.

Texas Tech wants to make a lot of noise at the NCAA indoor track and field championships, even without a lot of representation. Tech has only four individuals and one relay in the two-day national meet today hosted by Arkansas, but there’s a chance the Red Raiders could come away with a national champion and more than one all-American.
