Texas Tech senior Katie Grimes broke her own school record in the 55-meter hurdles, highlighting the Red Raiders’ first meet of the season Saturday.

Grimes, a returning second-team all-American from Canyon, ran a time of 7.71 seconds in the Tech Open, breaking her old mark of 7.74.

“She just ran an excellent race today,” Tech coach Wes Kittley said, “and continues to get better with every meet.”

More than 30 teams were entered in the one-day meet at the Athletic Training Center. Tech won 10 events.

Sophomore JaCorian Duffield cleared 7 feet, 13/4 inches in the high jump.

Tech won both the 1,600-meter relays. The women’s quartet of Christian Rivers, Amoy Blake, Candace Jackson and Cierra White posted a time of 3 minutes, 40.76 seconds. The men’s team of Joseph Richards, Dwayne Extol, Julian Munroe and Kenneth Williams ran a time of 3:13.29.

Thrower Ifeatu Okafor, one of the top returnees for the Lady Raiders, won the shot put with a best mark of 51-31/2.

Other Tech women’s wins came from Caitlin Waters in the 1,000 meters (2:59.55), Rivers in the 600-yard run (1:23.27) and Michaela Palu in the high jump (5-61/2).

The Tech men got first-place finishes from Nick Rivera in the 1,000 (2:31.70) and Jeremy Doddridge in the pole vault (16-63/4).

Tech hosts a two-day Masked Rider Open next weekend at the ATC.
