Texas Tech senior Katie Grimes and sophomore Kole Weldon both broke indoor school records Saturday, and the South Plains College men’s 1,600-meter relay impressed again on the final day of the Masked Rider Open.
Running for the second Saturday in a row at the Tech Athletic Training Center, Grimes broke her school record again in the 55-meter hurdles, going 7.67 seconds seven days after she set the mark at 7.71. The senior from Canyon has broken the school record three times in two years.
Weldon broke a four-year-old Tech indoor record in the shot put with a winning throw of 60 feet, 71/4 inches. The sophomore from Jacksboro is coming off a 2012 outdoor season in which he qualified for the NCAA championships in the discus.
The South Plains men ran a 3:07.55 in the 1,600-meter relay, using the quartet of returning sophomores Dakarie McKinnie, Daniel Harper, Anthonio Mascoll and Vernon Norwood.
Eight months ago at Tech’s Fuller Track, McKinnie, Harper, Bralon Taplin and Norwood set an NJCAA outdoor record in the 1,600 relay with a 3:01.32.
In the men’s 55-meter hurdles, two former Tech all-Americans hooked up. Omo Osaghae, now running professionally for Adidas, posted a winning time of 7.13, just ahead of Shane Brathwaite, who ran 7.16. Brathwaite was a senior last spring, when he finished seventh in the NCAA outdoor 110 hurdles.
On Friday night, the Tech men’s distance medley relay posted the second-best time in the nation this year, winning in 9:55.87. Kennedy Kithuka, who won the NCAA cross country title in the fall, anchored behind Ezekiel Kissorio, Joseph Richards III and Nick Rivera.
Kissorio also won the 3,000 meters in 8:25.77.
The South Plains men got first-place finishes from Elton Walcott in the triple jump, Shavez Hart in the 400 meters and Norwood in the 600-yard run.
Among the Tech women’s winners were Ifeatu Okafor in the shot put, Candace Jackson in the 200 and Christen Rivers in the 600-yard run.
Rivers, Jackson, SPC ex Amoy Blake and Cierra White won the women’s 1,600 relay for Tech in 3:37.34. The women’s distance medley relay went to South Plains in 12:05.79. That team consisted of Katya Miroshnikova, Curry Young, Brittany Letts and NJCAA half marathon and cross country champion Darroneshia Lott.
SPC ex Jura Levy, now competing for Oklahoma Baptist, won the women’s 55 meters in 6.81 seconds.
