Texas Tech played with a “spark.”
It just died out a little too fast to pull off its biggest upset of the year.
The Lady Raiders threatened early, but couldn’t finish off No.8 Texas and fell 76-55 on Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena.
“I feel like we we had a spark and the we were feeling it. The energy was high,” Texas Tech freshman point guard Japreece Dean said. “I feel like that spark helped everyone out.”
Texas Tech (11-16, 2-14 Big 12) as it has often this season, fell in an early hole as the Longhorns rattled off the first seven points of the game.

Pulling the upset
It’s been a long hard season for the Texas Tech women’s basketball team, which fell to 2-13 in the Big 12 with a 65-53 road loss to Kansas State on Sunday. Part of that can be alleviated Wednesday when the Lady Raiders host the No. 8 Texas Longhorns at 6:30 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena.
The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest Plus.
MANHATTAN — The Kansas State women’s basketball team pulled away from Texas Tech early in Sunday’s game at Bramlage Coliseum, notching a 23-8 first-half run on the way to a 65-53 win.
Forward Breanna Lewis scored 12 of her game-high 14 points during that stretch.

TEXAS TECH AT KANSAS STATE
2 P.M. SUNDAY, MANHATTAN, KANSAS
Texas Tech struggled against Kansas State at home — at least in the early going.
Now, the Lady Raiders basketball team has to go to Manhattan and face the Wildcats on the road Sunday at 2 p.m. Texas Tech didn’t score for more than 15 minutes in the two teams met in Lubbock.
Something that the Lady Raiders aren’t likely to forget and something they have a plan to correct their lack of scoring against Kansas State.
AMES, IOWA — Texas Tech fired a shot. Clank.
Iowa State fired a shot. Swish.
And that’s the way it went for most of the first half as the Cyclones used a 29-0 run to quickly take control, and effectively end, a Big 12 clash on Wednesday night. Iowa State shot 43.3 percent from the field to beat Texas Tech 77-48 at Hilton Coliseum.
“They were on fire and we made some defensive mistakes and they made us pay and made shots and obviously (we) shot a horrible percentage on the other end,” Texas Tech coach Candi Whitaker said.
Texas Tech hit some key shots.
It forced turnovers. And for nearly three quarters it gave No. 4 Baylor all it could handle.
It just wasn’t nearly enough in the end.
The Lady Bears used a third quarter surge to put away the Lady Raiders 66-36 on Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena.
“We couldn’t hang with them because we were not scoring the basketball,” Texas Tech coach Candi Whitaker said. “I thought we took good shots for the most part, but it seemed like they were all rimming out for a period there. We couldn’t get one to go down.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: TEXAS TECH VS. NO. 4 BAYLOR
2 P.M. SATURDAY, UNITED SUPERMARKETS ARENA
The Texas Tech Lady Raiders took a couple of days off this week to rest. They needed to be as fresh as possible with No. 4 Baylor coming into town on Saturday at 2 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Tech had its bye this week and hasn’t played since a Feb. 7 loss at Oklahoma State.
STILLWATER, Okla. — Texas Tech responded, but couldn’t quite come up with an answer for Brittney Martin.
Lady Raiders coach Candi Whitaker went off on her team after a 22-point loss to West Virginia earlier in the week, saying the lack of energy her team showed was “ridiculous.”
Sunday, Texas Tech played a full four quarters. It just wasn’t enough to win on the road in the Big 12 against an Oklahoma State team that came into the game with five straight wins, including two over its in-state rival, Oklahoma.
