Sooners hand Tech women their fifth consecutive loss 03/01/12 - 1:32am

Texas Tech gave an effort worthy of senior night, but the Lady Raiders could never pull ahead of Oklahoma in a 71-62 loss Wednesday at United Spirit Arena. The loss is the fifth in a row for Tech, which fell to 17-12 overall and 5-12 in Big 12 Conference play. The five-game losing streak is Texas Tech’s second of the season.

Mallard remains suspended, might not play her home finale 02/29/12 - 1:58am

Texas Tech senior forward Kierra Mallard was suspended Friday for a violation of team rules and did not travel to College Station for Saturday’s game against Texas A&M. Tech coach Kristy Curry didn’t say whether Mallard would return for a 7 p.m. tip today against Oklahoma, the Lady Raiders’ senior night. “Just taking it one day at a time,” Curry said Monday. “That’s all you can do.” Mallard is expected to be honored on the court before the game with fellow senior Jordan Barncastle. Curry described Mallard’s four years at Texas Tech as “up and down.”

Lady Raider Barncastle expects emotional farewell 02/29/12 - 11:15am

Jordan Barncastle already knows her final home game at Texas Tech will be an emotional one. The four-year forward will be honored as part of a senior day presentation before Texas Tech’s 7 p.m. tipoff today against Oklahoma at United Spirit Arena. “It’s just something really special,” Barncastle said, “and my family will be here and that will be nice. And it will be pretty comical with some of the pictures, I’m sure. There’s lots of emotions.” Few players throughout Tech coach Kristy Curry’s career elicit the sort of reaction Barncastle does.

Aggies bid farewell with rout of Lady Raiders 02/26/12 - 1:55am

COLLEGE STATION — The Texas Tech women’s basketball team dominated the all-time series against Big 12 Conference rival Texas A&M. But the 14th-ranked Aggies had the last laugh Saturday, handing the Lady Raiders their worst loss of the season, 79-51, at Reed Arena. A&M seniors Adaora Elonu and Tyra White led the way on senior night, collecting 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Mallard suspended, won't play vs. A&M 02/25/12 - 1:37am

The Texas Tech women’s basketball team didn’t get much from Kierra Mallard when the Lady Raiders hosted Texas A&M on Feb. 1. Mallard, in her first game back from an undisclosed injury, came off the bench to score eight points on 2-of-13 shooting. The Lady Raiders lost 67-55 and shot 20 percent (5 of 25) in the second half. Tech will face No. 14 Texas A&M again at 7 p.m. Saturday at Reed Arena, and the Lady Raiders won’t get anything from Mallard.

Tech AD Hocutt: Curry will be our coach next season 02/25/12 - 1:33am

The Texas Tech women’s basketball program isn’t where athletic director Kirby Hocutt imagined it would be at the beginning of the 2011-12 season. The Lady Raiders were 14-0 and ranked in the top 10 six weeks ago but nosedived during Big 12 Conference play and likely need to win their remaining three games to reach the NCAA tournament. Tech is 17-10 overall, 5-10 in the Big 12 and in a three-way tie for seventh place.

Brown still white-hot Junior guard Chynna Brown led Texas Tech with 21 points against Kansas on Tuesday, matching a season-high. Brown became the first Tech player to score 20 or more points in two games this season. She’s led the team in scoring in three of the last four games. “Just coming off the screens hard,” Brown said. “If I’m open just shooting the ball and not thinking about it so much. And just trying to be aggressive, getting to the goal anytime I could.” Brown made her fourth consecutive start and her 10 field goals were a career-high.
