Texas Tech fans supported the Lady Raiders through a 70-66 vctory of No. 16 Penn State.

Coquese Washington didn’t trudge into her postgame press conference at United Spirit Arena wearing the distraught look of a coach whose team had just suffered a heartbreaking loss. Sure, her No. 16 Penn State squad fell to No. 19 Texas Tech 70-66 on Saturday, but even for the losing side, there was fun to be had in the process. “This was a great basketball environment,” Washington said. “This is a great place to play a game. The fans were into it. They are knowledgeable. They didn’t yell stupid stuff. They yelled some pretty good stuff.”

Monique Smalls tossed an inbounds pass to senior forward Jordan Barncastle, who was waiting at the baseline in front of the Tech bench. Penn State guard Maggie Lucas rushed to cover her and get a hand in her face, but it didn’t matter.

The Penn State game will certainly be Tech's biggest test of the non-conference season as the Lady Raiders remain unbeaten and ranked 19th.

Wins have come easy so far for the Texas Tech women’s basketball team. The unbeaten and 19th-ranked Lady Raiders are thrashing opponents by an average of 33½ points per game. Tech is 11th in the country in scoring offense, eighth in scoring margin, third in rebound margin and eighth in steals per game. Those stats came in wins against New Mexico, Houston, Missouri-Kansas City, Central Arkansas, Louisiana-Monroe and Texas State — teams with a combined 14-27 record.

Smalls day-to-day with hip injury 12/01/11 - 4:02pm

Texas Tech junior point guard Monique Smalls suffered a hip pointer injury during Wednesday's game against Texas State. Smalls practiced with limited mobility Thursday morning and is listed as day-to-day. The injury occurred early in the second half. Smalls came out 2 1/2 minutes into the half and remained out the rest of the game. The No. 19 Lady Raiders host No. 16 Penn State at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Sophomore forward Shauntal Nobles spent the offseason working on becoming a more aggressive inside presence for Texas Tech. The work she put in showed in a big way Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena. The 6-foot-3 Nobles came off the bench and notched her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and the 19th-ranked Lady Raiders went on to trounce Texas State, 85-40. “It was definitely my focus in the summer, just being more aggressive and being more of a presence offensively,” Nobles said.
