A display of physical and aggressive play has dominated the floor in the Texas Tech women’s basketball team’s past two games. Whether it was taking 42 trips to the free-throw line against West Virginia or grabbing 42 rebounds against TCU — Tech’s second-highest total in Big 12 Conference play this season — the Lady Raiders are fighting to continue their already strong season. “I think we’ve been trying to play tough the whole season,” Tech guard Casey Morris said Monday in a phone interview, “but it’s come together really well now because it’s the end of the season.”

Keep the engine running FORT WORTH — During a nearly six-minute period in the second half in Texas Tech’s 64-46 victory against TCU, Horned Frog coach Jeff Mittie burned three timeouts. The Lady Raiders started the half on a 19-4 run, and apparently there was not stopping it. Mittie held one finger up to his players after the third timeout he took in the half, indicating that he only had one left because of the way his team couldn’t stop the Lady Raider run.

FORT WORTH — Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry knows her team can overcome an offensive rut on the road by controlling defense and rebounding. When the Lady Raiders weren’t in control offensively for the first 12 minutes of their Saturday-night match against TCU, they took over on the boards and defesively. Tech went on a 25-4 run after falling into an early 21-10 hole and never stepped off the gas in a 64-46 victory.

West Virginia pushed hard against Texas Tech. So Tech pushed harder. The pink-clad Lady Raiders drove the lane at will against the Mountaineers on Wednesday night, countering an aggressive Mountaineer press with 42 trips to the free-throw line and ultimately a 76-63 victory against West Virginia. Tech shot 85.7 percent from the foul line, making a season-best 36 free throws.

Tech, West Virginia show breast cancer awareness Texas Tech and West Virginia players wore pink in Wednesday’s game in United Spirit Arena as part of the Play4Kay Pink Game. The Lady Raiders wore special pink jerseys to show support for breast cancer awareness, as dozens of women who have battled breast cancer were recognized before and during the game. Women involved in Tech athletics and the Lubbock community ran on a pink treadmill to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle.

Monique Smalls hit a 3-pointer to force overtime against Michigan State on Dec. 20, and instinct took over for freshman Ivonne Cook-Taylor. Cook-Taylor, who tore her ACL two months before — just a few days into fall practice — couldn’t quite jump as high as her teammates did on that play, but she still left her chair. “I was like ‘ohh,’” she said last week, duplicating the grimace she felt because of the injury. “I was hesitant on the jump, but it was a good moment, It was exciting.”
