Colorado Rockies take Texas Tech pitcher Bettis in second round   01/13/11 - 10:37pm

Texas Tech junior right-handed pitcher Chad Bettis was selected in the second round, No. 76 overall, by the Colorado Rockies in the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Bettis was7-4 with a 4.41 ERA for the Red Raiders in 2010 with 10 saves. He is the school's all-time career saves leader (17) and also led the team in strikeouts (102). He is the fourth player in school history to be taken in the second round or higher, and is the highest draft pick for Tech since Matt Miller was taken by Detroit in 1996.

Tech women's tennis recruiting class nets high marks   01/13/11 - 10:37pm

The incoming recruiting class for Texas Tech women’s tennis has been ranked 19th in the nation by the Tennis Recruiting Network. Two of the players joining the Lady Raiders in 2010-11, Samantha Adams of New Braunfels and Haley Fournier from Leawood, Kan., are ranked as five-star players by the website. The other incoming freshman, Nikki Sanders of Ontario, Calif., is rated as a four-star player. Among the returnees for Tech is senior Kelsy Garland, a Coronado product.

Carvalho named all-American in tennis   01/13/11 - 10:37pm

Texas Tech’s Raony Carvalho has been named an NCAA Division I all-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Carvalho, a sophomore from Brazil, posted 26 singles victories for the second consecutive year and finished the season ranked 20th in the country by the ITA. He had a singles record of 19-6 in dual matches and a 26-11 overall mark.

When Jansen Hyde finished high school, the two gold medals and the two silver medals he'd won at Texas Class 4A state meets gave him options. He considered signing with Utah, where he had a friend attending, or going to Oregon, whose track and field tradition sets the standard for programs nationwide. But then Hyde took his recruiting trip to Texas Tech, and the Red Raiders brought out their big guns. Marlon Odom and Shawon Harris were Hyde's hosts and college all-Americans in his best event - the hurdles. "That's what really helped to get me here,'' Hyde said.

Rumors of a Big 12 defection began with Missouri, detoured south to Austin, but never included Nebraska. Heck, the first time the Pac-10 got involved it was said to be courting Colorado.
