Texas Tech sports roundup: Coronado grad Davis places third at Texas Relays   03/30/13 - 12:42am

AUSTIN — Former Coronado standout Paul Davis took third place in the shot put Friday at the Texas Relays, continuing his outstanding 2013. Davis’ best mark was 63 feet, 101/4 inches, breaking the McMurry University school record. Davis finished one spot ahead of Texas Tech sophomore Kole Weldon, who threw 61-113/4. Davis competed at the U.S. indoor track and field championships in March at the same time Weldon was finishing as runner-up at the NCAA indoor championships. Texas sophomore Ryan Crouser won the shot put Friday with a mark of 67-01/2.

New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies said he was in Lubbock on Tuesday but has no interest in pursuing Texas Tech's open basketball coaching position, the Las Cruces-Sun News reported Tuesday evening. An El Paso news station had earlier reported Menzies arrived in Lubbock to speak with Tech officials about the job. Menzies told the newspaper, though, he plans to remain the head coach of the Aggies, a team he has led to three NCAA Tournaments in three seasons as its coach.

Tech sports roundup: Tech sweeps Iowa State on senior day   03/25/13 - 12:32am

The Texas Tech women’s tennis team sent out its three seniors in style Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 romp against Iowa State in Big 12 Conference play. The No. 20 Lady Raiders (13-4, 3-0 in Big 12 Conference play) didn’t lose a single set against the Cyclones (6-10, 0-4). The match was delayed one hour, 45 minutes because of cold weather, but Tech came out hot to notch its 16th straight victory at McLeod Tennis Center. Iowa State defaulted the doubles point to Tech because of the weather delay.

Texas Tech roundup: Tech splits with Boise State to finish Las Vegas trip   03/24/13 - 1:07am

LAS VEGAS — The Texas Tech softball game split a doubleheader to Boise State on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Rebel Classic. After beating Boise State 3-2 to come-from-behind fashion to start the day, Tech allowed a three-run home run to Devon Bridges in the top of the seventh to drop Game 2, 4-2. The Red Raiders (26-12) also lost to UNLV, 5-3 late Friday night. Cara Custer earned the win and the loss Saturday, pitching well but not getting much run support from the Tech bats.

Blown fuse in ESPN truck took final minutes of Lady Raider loss off air   03/23/13 - 9:09pm

A blown fuse in an ESPN production truck caused a 20-minute outage that took the final minutes of Texas Tech's 71-70 loss to South Florida off the air. The loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament ended the season for the Lady Raiders.
