HOUSTON — Hunter Pence hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros avoided a series sweep with a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Mike Leake (3-2) walked J.R. Towles with one out in the ninth before Pence’s full-count hit landed in the corner of right field and sent Towles home.
The Astros led 3-1 before the Reds tied it with consecutive homers by Chris Heisey and Drew Stubbs in the seventh inning.
Michael Bourn gave the Astros an early lead with a two-run single in the second inning.
Wandy Rodriguez tied a season high by allowing 10 hits and gave up three runs with four strikeouts in seven innings. He was replaced by Wilton Lopez, who pitched a perfect eighth before Mark Melancon (3-1) in the ninth.
n Padres 13, Brewers 6
MILWAUKEE — Cameron Maybin drove in the go-ahead runs and Ryan Ludwick homered in an eight-run eighth inning after the San Diego Padres had already squandered one big lead in a win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Padres racked up a season-high 23 hits after coming in hitting a majors-worst .219.
Chris Denorfia led off the game with a homer and San Diego built an early 5-0 lead, but Milwaukee rallied with Prince Fielder’s 200th career homer and Yuniesky Betancourt’s solo shot to go ahead 6-5 until the eighth.
n Dodgers 2, Pirates 0
PITTSBURGH — At age 36, Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Hiroki Kuroda no longer tries to blow people away.
The veteran right-hander relies more on moxie than might these days, though he showed plenty of both in a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Baffling the lifeless Pirates all night, Kuroda (4-3) allowed three hits while striking out eight over seven innings to provide the Dodgers with their first two-game winning streak in three weeks.
n Phillies 5, Marlins 3
MIAMI — Jimmy Rollins delivered a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the Florida Marlins.
The Phillies fell behind 3-0, but their bats came alive after Cliff Lee departed for a pinch hitter in the seventh.
Shane Victorino extended his hitting streak to 14 games when he led off the eighth with his sixth homer, which came off Mike Dunn and made the score 3-all.
n Nationals 7, Braves 3
ATLANTA — Ian Desmond hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the 11th inning, Jayson Werth followed with a two-run homer and the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves.
Alex Cora drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the ninth as Braves closer Craig Kimbrel blew a 3-1 lead.
Drew Storen (3-1) pitched the 10th and Tyler Clippard took over in the 11th for his first save.
