Tech ex Mathieu DQed in 200 semis
LONDON — Former Texas Tech all-American Michael Mathieu was disqualified from Wednesday’s Olympic track and field competition when he false started in the semifinals of the men’s 200 meters.
Mathieu, who ran for Tech in 2005 and 2006, competes for the Bahamas. He had run a personal best of 20.16 seconds at a meet in May.
He was one of two area-connected athletes competing in the Olympics 200. South Plains College’s Trevor Mackey, a freshman on the Texans’ NJCAA championship team this year, finished seventh in his first-round heat Tuesday and didn’t advance. Mackey’s time was 21.28 seconds.
Mathieu and fellow Tech ex Andrae Williams now turn their focus to the 1,600-meter relay, for which both are part of the pool of runners on the Bahamian team. Mathieu and Williams won silver medals on the relay in 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
