LAWRENCE, Kan. — Markel Brown scored 28 points, Marcus Smart added 25 and Oklahoma State held on to upset No. 2 Kansas 85-80 on Saturday, ending the Jayhawks’ nation-leading 18-game winning streak.
Smart had a pair of key putbacks in the closing minutes, helping the Cowboys (15-5, 5-3 Big 12) go on a 13-2 run that turned a 66-62 deficit into a 73-68 lead with just over a minute left.
The Jayhawks (19-2, 7-1) took advantage of a couple missed free throws, trimming Oklahoma State’s lead to 81-80 on a layup by Elijah Johnson with 18.8 seconds left.
But unflappable freshman Phil Forte, an 89 percent foul shooter, made both of his tries with 7.9 seconds to go, and Johnson turned the ball over before Kansas could try a tying 3-pointer.
Forte converted the turnover into a buzzer-beating layup, punctuating the Cowboys’ first road win over a top 5 team since beating then-No. 2 Kansas 52-50 in overtime on Jan. 2, 1958.
Forte finished with 11 points, all in the second half.
Ben McLemore had 23 points to lead the Jayhawks, who also had their 33-game home winning streak snapped in their first home loss to Oklahoma State since Feb. 8, 1989.
■ No. 18 Kansas State 52
NORMAN, Okla. — Angel Rodriguez hit two free throws with 5.6 seconds remaining to give Kansas State a victory over Oklahoma.
The foul shots ended an 8-0 run by the Sooners in the final 2 minutes that tied the game with 13 seconds to play.
Rodriguez was fouled on a jumper in the lane and made both free throws to put Kansas State back in front. Sam Grooms had a chance to win it for the Sooners, but his 3-point attempt at the buzzer was short.
Will Spradling led the Wildcats (17-4, 6-2 Big 12) with 12 points, including five in a row after the Sooners pulled within one with 11:27 to go. With the win, the Wildcats remain in second place in the Big 12, one game behind Kansas. Their leading scorer, Rodney McGruder, was held to seven points on 2-for-8 shooting.
■ Iowa State 79, Baylor 71
AMES, Iowa — Will Clyburn notched his sixth double-double of the season with 28 points and 10 rebounds as Iowa State beat Baylor in a tense Big 12 Conference game.
Clyburn, a senior, sank three 3-pointers on an uncharacteristically icy night from beyond the arc for the Cyclones (15-6, 5-3), who pulled into a four-way tie for third place in the conference standings.
Iowa State won its league-leading 19th straight game at home and extended its conference home win streak to 11.
The Bears (14-7, 5-3) lost their second consecutive game and fell to 0-11 all-time in Ames. Pierre Jackson led Baylor with 23 points.
Georges Niang added 17 points for the Cyclones, who missed their first 13 3-point attempts.
■ Texas 60, TCU 43
AUSTIN — Ioannis Papapetrou scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Texas over TCU, as the Longhorns earned just their second Big 12 win of the season against the last-place team in the league.
Texas (10-11, 2-6) controlled the game throughout with suffocating defense that held TCU (9-12, 0-8) to 33 percent shooting. Sheldon McClellan added 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting for Texas.
Papapetrou, a freshman from Greece, scored Texas’s first two baskets of the second half in a 7-0 run that pushed the Longhorns to a 19-point lead.
Adrick McKinney had 13 points and eight rebounds for TCU, which lost its eighth in a row in its first season in the Big 12.
