Lady Raiders cruise past Alcorn State, 90-37

Posted: December 18, 2016 - 6:07pm

Alcorn State’s Miracle Rushing hit a jumper 53 seconds into the first quarter and tied the game, 2-2.

That was as close as it got.

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders rolled off a 15-0 run fueled by a pair of 3-pointers by Recee’ Caldwell and Larryn Brooks and kept pouring it on as they easily dispatched winless Alcorn State 90-37 on Sunday at United Supermarkets Arena.

“I was proud of our consistency throughout the game,” Texas Tech coach Candi Whitaker said. “I thought we had multiple people step up and make plays on both ends of the floor. I am proud of our execution and effort.”

Alcorn State (0-9) hit a couple of 3s to stay in the game early in the second quarter, but Dayo Olabode hit a 3-pointer to put Tech up 26-10 and then added a three-point play with 21 second before the half. Tech led 41-16 at halftime.

But, Tech never stopped hustling and outscored Alcorn State 52-10 in the paint.

“We can’t just look at the score and the team we are playing,” Tech post Jada Terry said, “But, also the future and preparing for that.”

The Lady Raiders (7-3) kept it going, while getting extensive playing time for their bench, which outscored Alcorn State on its own (41-37).

Olabode, who scored 12 points, came off the bench and was one of six players in double figures for the Lady Raiders, including starters Jady Terry (15), Arella Guirantes (13), Caldwell (11) and Brooks (10). Grayson Bright scored 10 off the bench.

“That is good sign (to have our bench do so well) because when we start conference we are going to need them,” Terry said. “We will need all eight, nine players we have then and to have them come in and make an impact is going to be very effective in Big 12.”

Caldwell led the team with nine assists and Olabode, Terry and Brittany Brewer all had seven rebounds. Tia Sanders led Alcorn State with 12 points.

Ivonne CookTaylor started, but only played two minutes — she left as soon as the game was out of hand — in order to rest her knees.

It was one of a pair of tune-up contests for the Lady Raiders before they open Big 12 play Dec. 29 against Texas. Tech hosts the University of Texas-Arlington on Thursday at a 2 p.m.

“I think no matter who play we are always working on ourselves. That is what coach Whitaker preaches,” Caldwell said. “So, to come out and execute some of the new stuff (is good). We also use these games for film to correct and critique what we need to do better.

“I think we shared the ball well today and we rebounded OK. We were just unselfish.”

Player of the game

The Texas Tech bench. It outscored Alcorn State’s entire team 41-37 and was led by Dayo Olabode, who scored 12 points and had seven rebounds, and Grayson Bright, who scored 10 points.
