Then Baylor’s exciting dual-threat quarterback tore the ACL in his right knee and missed the last nine games of the 2009 season. While stuck on the sideline watching, he realized just how much he loved the game. “After a knee injury like that, a lot of times you see guys come back and it’s not the same,” Griffin said. “So I didn’t want that to be attached to me, great player, got hurt, never was the same. ... My goal was to come back better, not only for myself, but for my teammates.”

Mike Sherman was fired and replaced by Kevin Sumlin, but he won’t coach the Aggies against Northwestern in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 31. They’ll be led by interim coach Tim DeRuyter, who must help the Aggies prepare for the game before he leaves to become Fresno State’s coach. “There are a lot of distractions, but we’re just going to put that to the side,” DeRuyter said.

DALLAS — Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III from Baylor was among five Big 12 Conference players named to the Football Writers Association of America all-America team released Saturday. The Big 12 claimed both wide receiver spots with Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon and Oklahoma’s Ryan Broyles. Rounding out the league’s representation were offensive tackle Levy Adcock and kicker Quinn Sharp, both from Oklahoma State.
