Thousands run and walk for their own motives, but all for one cause - to raise breast cancer awareness.

As a former receptionist at the Southwest Cancer Center at University Medical Center, she said she would see a constant stream of mostly women seeking care and treatment for breast cancer, among other diseases. She would empathize with their concerns as she checked them in, heard their stories and passed their information along to doctors. “But I never thought I was going to be the statistic,” she said. Cruz’s recent breast cancer diagnosis marked her transition from empathy to focusing on the power of being positive in fighting the disease that became personal.

The Avalanche-Journal hopes to raise breast cancer awareness during a community campaign.

One of the crucial battles in the war against breast cancer — awareness — will be waged Tuesday at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center during a community campaign organized by The Avalanche-Journal. Doors to the daylong We Think Pink event open at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and guests will be able to visit 80 exhibits until 7 p.m. Admission is free with a ticket, and tickets are available at the door or can be picked up at the information counter at The A-J, 710 Ave. J, or Fox34, 98th Street and University Avenue.
